Makeup tips for fair skin

Do you burn under the sun easily, find new clusters of freckles every month, or naturally get pink cheeks? If so, chances are you’re pretty pale and likely have several versions of “Ivory” in your foundation collection.

I’ve come up with makeup tips for fair skin to show you that enhancing your features isn’t just about grabbing the palest shades.

Here are 10 Simple Makeup Tips for Fair Skin

Tip #1 – Take Good Care of Your Skin

Every great makeup look starts with a clean and healthy canvas. Your skincare routine should be tailored to your skin type be it dry, oily or combination skin. Along with protecting and repairing your skin, applying serums, moisturizers, and primers are the best way to help makeup perform better and to keep a barrier between your pores and the products you use.

For fair skin, SPF is a crucial part of any skincare routine and is the most important makeup tip for fair skin. Protect your lips as well as the rest of your face from damaging UV rays. Use an SPF of 30 or higher to prevent early signs of aging and cancer-causing damage to skin cells. Fair skin is more prone to sun damage and needs all the protection it can get.

Tip #2 – The Right Foundation for Fair Skin

Not all fair skin is the same. Undertones play a big role in choosing the right shade of foundation. If you have fair skin and warm undertones choose the lightest shade of foundation available, you may be forcing a cool tone foundation that’s going to strip the life from your skin.

If you use a warm-toned foundation on cool-tone skin, your face won’t match your neck or the rest of your body.

Like your skincare routine, your skin type also matters when choosing a foundation. If you have dry fair skin, in particular, it’s best to choose foundations specifically for dry skin. Dry patches can show up on fair skin. The wrong type of foundation will cling to it and create unwanted texture. Fortunately, it isn’t difficult to find foundations for all skin types. Even better if you find a foundation with SPF!

Tip # 3 – Choose Cream Products Over Powder

The following steps in your makeup routine are what bring color, dimension, and life to your skin. And besides eyeshadow and bronzer, the most important makeup tips for fair skin will all but eliminate powder products.

As with matte foundations, I forewarned you about, setting your skin with powder, using powdered bronzer, contour, blusher, etc will completely wipe your skin tone out creating a veil of powder over fair skin. Cream face products are just as available as their powdery counterparts and will give fair skin the natural glow and healthy dewiness it craves.

Tip # 4 – Always Use Blush

If you’re using foundation, adding a natural flush of color in the form of blush is necessary. Using your fingers, apply small amounts of blush along the cheeks, applying in a circular motion, building coverage if required.

Blush appears more natural on the fairest of skin than other skin tones that are tan and deep. Because fair skin usually is more transparent and flushes naturally, not applying blush after foundation leaves skin noticeably blank.

Tip #5 – Use Bronzer

Bronze is great, though not as critical as blush, it brings life back into your face and removes all risk of looking like a vampire who avoids the sun at all costs. Using a big powder brush dust bronzer on temples, nose, cheeks, and jawline. A big brush will allow the application to look more natural, but you should still go light-handed. After dipping your brush into the pan dust off the access product, then apply.

Tip #6 – Define Eyebrows

They say eyes are the window to the soul. But we in the makeup community know they really meant eyebrows. Fair skin lovelies usually have a fair hair color or at least fair eyebrows. If you’ve already got plenty of eyebrow hairs all you’ll need is a tinted eyebrow gel, otherwise, use a brow pencil to shape and fill. Choose a shade that matches your undertone is slightly deeper than your natural brow shade.

Tip #7 – Eye Makeup for Fair Skin

The approach to eye makeup on fair skin is best subtle and chic. Bright colors, black eyeliner, and a smokey eye can quickly turn muddy or look like children’s play art. Avoid nudes, reds, and pinks around eyes. These shades can wash you out and give a sickly appearance.

Indulgy in toasty earth tones like gold, rose gold, champagne, and hues of taupe. For deeper shadows, reach for shades of green or plum.

Tip #8 – Avoid Black Mascara

There aren’t extensive rules when using mascara on fair skin beyond avoiding black. Brown is a much softer way to thicken and lengthen lashes. Black mascara will look harsh and any clumps or imperfections in the product will be apparent.

Tip #9 – Lipstick Colors

When you have fair and very fair skin it’s easy to take lips from dull to va-va-voom! You can pull off bright and bold easily. Fuscia pink and fire engine red are my personal favorites on light skin tones. But, deep maroon, coral, light pink, and plum are great too. Avoid neutral shades, muted browns, and purples.

Tip #10 – Go for No Makeup, Makeup

The makeup tips for fair skin are great when doing a full face of glam. But you can also rock the no makeup, makeup look. For those with fair skin that entails a hydrating and restorative skincare routine, SPF, a little BB or CC cream, a touch of blush, brown mascara, and a light pink lip gloss. Sometimes, less is more!
