essential oils for eye wrinkles

Our eyes contain the most delicate skin on our body. The under-eye area and eyelids can be easily irritated by the products we use, I know this from personal experience.

We all want a way to combat the fine lines and dark circles that we experience around our eyes. Essential oils offer us a natural way to renew our skin, but we need to know what essential oils are safe for use on this delicate area.

The best essential oil for eye wrinkles will combat the signs of aging while being gentle enough to put near our eyes. It will stimulate collagen production and keep existing cells healthy. It will reduce inflammation and even the tone of the skin.

Using Essential Oils Safely Around the Eyes

First off, THEY MUST BE DILUTED. This is important. You absolutely should not use undiluted essential oils near your eyes, a safe dilution rate is 1%.

Secondly, your essential oil + carrier oil blend should only be used sparingly around the eye area, avoiding very close to your eyes. You should not use your essential oil blend on your eyelid, as it can travel into your eye.

Apply your essential oil blend to the underside and sides of your eye.

It is best to apply your eye serum in the morning, as the oils can trap in moisture during the night and leave you with puffy eyes in the morning.

What to do if you get an essential oil in your eye:

If you do get an essential oil into your eye, you can flush your eye with milk to emulsify the oil, then rinse the milk out with water.

lavender essential oils for eye wrinkles

Essential Oils for the Eye Area

There is a handful of oils that are excellent for anti-aging. The ones that can be used safely around the eye are:

  • Helichrysum – promotes healing.
  • Geranium – regenerates the skin.
  • Carrot seed – fights crows feet and revitalizes the skin.
  • Frankincense – useful for age spots and reduces wrinkles.
  • Rose – improve elasticity and firmness, reduces dark spots.
  • German chamomile – soothes, very high in antioxidants, reduces puffiness.
  • Lavender – DOES ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Carrier Oils for the Eye Area

Some excellent carrier oils for an eye area blend are:

  • Apricot Kernel oil – gentle and one of the best oils for the eye area.
  • Argan oil – excellent anti-aging properties.
  • Jojoba oil – a fabulous hydrating oil.
  • Avocado oil – great for those with dry skin.

Which is the Best Essential Oil for Eye Wrinkles?

Lavender is the best essential oil for eye wrinkles because it is gentle, soothing, anti-inflammatory, skin brightening, elasticity enhancing, and regenerative. It is also very affordable.

Lavender is the best because it is a multi-tasker! Get the benefits of a bunch of essential oils in one.

diy eye serum for wrinkles

Recipe for you own Eye Serum

  • 2 teaspoons carrier oil
  • 3 drops carrot seed oil (cold-pressed)
  • One vitamin E capsule if you are under 45, and two vitamin E capsules if you are over 45 (get them here)
  • 2 – 4 drops of your chosen essential oil.

Blend the carrier oil, carrot seed oil, and Vitamin E capsules together.

Add your essential oil and mix well.

Apply a small amount gently around the eye area. Leave on for a bit and wipe off any excess.

Where to Buy Your Essential Oils

My favorite essential oil brand is Rocky Mountain Oils. You can head over to their online store, or you can read my article, What is the Best Essential Oil Brand? To learn more.

using hydrosols for eye wrinkles
Try Hydrosols for a More Gentle Approach

You can use hydrosols or herbal infusions on your eye area for a more gentle, but still useful, treatment. Use a hydrosol if you don’t want to take the risk of getting an essential oil inside your eye.

Try using chamomile, lavender, or rose hydrosol for an anti-aging treatment.

Apply a little hydrosol to a cotton ball and hold over a closed eye for a few minutes, the hydrosol will soothe the skin around your eyes, imparting hydration, antioxidant repair and protection, and fighting the signs of aging.

Carrier Oils

Another option is to use an anti-aging carrier oil such as argan or jojoba and skip the essential oils altogether.

Conclusion

You can safely use essential oils around the eye area, you just need to apply sparingly and be careful not to get any in your eyes.

Essential oils make a great anti-aging tool because of their potent antioxidants and skin-nourishing properties.

Try out the above recipe and let us know how it works. And remember to head over to Rocky Mountain Oils to shop high-quality oils today!

What do you think? Are essential oils safe to use around the eyes? Do you have an essential oil that you use?

This is an interesting article ….. and I must say that I absolutely love the design of your website! It is so appealing to the eye and you offer so much good information. You gals have truly done a great job here!

I have been thinking about purchasing an Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser by Tria. Do you know if the laser treatments like this one are beneficial for fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes? Thanks so much!

Wow I had not thought about using essential oils as an anti ageing tool. I love essential oils and use them regularly-most in a vaporizer, but also on my skin (I use the Young Living ‘feelings’ range). I will be sure to try your recipe-especially as this year I am turning 40 and starting to think about anti ageing creams (something I have never bothered with before). What would you say are the best anti stress essential oils?

I also think that in order to look younger we need to pay good attention to our diet and to our hydration as well as physical exercise.

Thanks for stopping in Liz, and yes, essential oils have many uses 🙂 The best anti-stress oils are ones that bring a sense of calm and relaxation when you smell them. These include lavender, frankincense, blue tansy, chamomile, and sandalwood work really well.

You are right, we do need to pay attention to our diet and make sure we drink enough water in order to stay healthy and to look our best!

I use Oils everyday and find frankincense, bergamot, and lavender to really improve my mood, anxiety, and stress levels. I use them in a diffuser, drop in the bath, a diluted rollerball and I drop frankincense in to my burts bees facial lotion. Maybe overkill, and sometimes I crave other scents such as vetiver (very grounding) but these three together are my go-tos for stress and skin!

I must say I Love your website! I’ve learned a lot from reading it. You guys are amazing. Thank you for all the info you provide here!
I have some questions. Is eye serum=eye cream? Is carrier oil better than carrier oil blended with essential oils for under eye area? How should I make blending for eyes? How many esstial oils can be used in carrier oils for eyes? And with what dilution? I have jojoba oil, rosehip seed oil, pomegranate oil and sea buckhorn berry oil. Can I mix them together blended with essential oils for eye area?

About sea buckhorn oil, can I just use it alone for face and under eye areas every day? Pure thanks!

Hi Kandi, thanks for your questions. An eye serum is usually different than an eye cream. Serums are sometimes lightweight, water-based products, or sometimes they are an oil based product. An eye cream is usually thicker than a serum.

      – Is carrier oil better than carrier oil blended with essential oils for under eye area? I wouldn’t say it is necessarily better, just a bit safer. Essential oils are potent and you do not want them getting into your eye. As long as you are careful to not get your carrier oil/essential oil mix too close to your eye, you should have no problems.

      – How many essential oils can be used in carrier oils for eyes? You can use as many as you like, as long as the dilution isn’t too strong. I would say it is best to stick to no more than 3 different essential oils.

      – And with what dilution? The recommended dilution for daily skin care use is 1%. That would be 1 essential oil drop in 5 ml of carrier oil or 4 drops in 15 ml.

Your blend of jojoba, rosehip, pomegranate and sea buckthorn would be great for the eye area. Those are all great oils for keeping wrinkles at bay 🙂 You could add a bit of lavender essential oil to this blend if you wanted, or keep it essential oil free.

      – About sea buckhorn oil, can I just use it alone for face and under eye areas every day? Yes you can. We have an article about sea buckthorn here.

      Hi Bel!
      First off, Congratulations!
There are an abundance of oil blends you can do to help with your skins elasticity. I love to use carrier oils. Avocado oil and Argan oil are both fantastic. What I would recommend the most though, is Shea butter. You want a product that absorbs deep into the skins tissue and is very hydrating. Check out one of our articles on Shea butter to learn more.
keep in touch, we would love to hear how it all goes 🙂
      All the best to you!

Hi Elvira, thanks for your question. I do not recommend putting this on your eyelids, as the serum will run into your eyes from there. You can use it under your eyes, but not on the eyelids.

Hi Sooz, you can omit the vitamin E and solely use a plant oil. Either oil is good, but I would say argan oil probably has a higher vitamin E content than jojoba.

So excited I just found this website. I have been looking for information on DIY essential oils for anti-aging around the eyes and skin care. I cannot seem to find any place that tells me if I can put on essential oil’s with Retin-A and if so do I do it before the Retin-A or after? Thank you so much!

Hi Yvette, thanks for stopping in. I am unsure about using essential oils along with Retin-A. I would suggest using them separately, as you may end up with irritation. So maybe in the morning, you use your essential oil and then at night, you use the Retin-A. I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

Hello Sooz, thanks for stopping in! If you are using 1000iu capsules, one should be plenty. I really like apricot kernel oil for around the eye area – you can learn why here. Both jojoba and argan are excellent choices. It is really about personal preference. Jojoba has a bit of a lighter consistency, but argan oil is jam-packed with vitamin E and other anti-aging compounds. I have an article comparing jojoba oil and argan oil for acne you can check out. It will help you see the similarities and differences of these oils.
