Primers are a makeup step that many people don’t take advantage of, but just like you prime a wall or a canvas before you paint it, so too should you prime your skin to get the very best finish.
The problem with mainstream primers is that they more often than not contain silicone, parabens, phtalates and other nasty chemicals that we don't want one our skin.
The Best Organic Primers Will:
- Be non-toxic and nourishing to the skin.
- Prep your skin for your foundation by smoothing your skin’s texture.
- Keep your makeup looking great all day.
Our Top Pick For the Best Organic Primers
Vapour Organic Beauty makes the best organic primers. In fact, they are our favorite organic makeup company!
Vapour Organic Beauty offers 2 primers: the Stratus Luminous Instant Skin Perfector and the Stratus Soft Focus Instant Skin Perfector.
Stratus primers are a 3-in-1 product, acting as a moisturizer, a primer and a non-color foundation. It works really well as a primer under Vapour’s Atmosphere Foundation. [Read: Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere Luminous Foundation Review]
Both of the Stratus primers nourish the skin with organic pumpkin seed oil, evening primrose oil and silica. These primers are infused with soothing Frankincense, calming Lotus, and antioxidant Tulsi.
These two primers are formulated with different skin types in mind.
Stratus Soft Focus Instant Skin Perfector
A primer for oily and combo skin is going to control oil and shine as well as prep your skin for holding on to your foundation. A primer helps smooth the texture of your skin and gives your foundation something to grip to.
Stratus Soft Focus offers light moisture with oil control. It doesn’t clog pores and is lightweight and breathable. Offers a sheer satin finish. Soft Focus Instant Skin Perfector comes in three shades.
Customer Reviews:
People have found that they love this product because it is non-toxic and works well. It is light and gives a nice balanced tone and fresh look to the skin. This primer works well even on those who are very sensitive to “natural” drug store brands.
Why is this the Best Primer?
This is the best organic primer because it offers exceptional results, with many satisfied costumers. I personally love using Vapour’s products, they go on like dream and are as soft as a cloud. The ingredients are excellent, with no silicones, parabens, phtalates, or synthetic fragrances.
Vapour Beauty does not test on animals and they are powered with wind power. They are a company that I feel good buying from.
Stratus Luminous Instant Skin Perfector
A primer for dry or mature skin is going to provide hydration and nourishment. It will moisturize your skin, preventing it from absorbing the moisture in your foundation and leaving you with a dry and flaky look.
The Stratus Instant Skin Perfector nourishes and deeply moisturizes your skin, giving you a smooth surface to apply your foundation, and creating a dewy glow. Offers a sheer dewy luminous finish. Luminous Instant Skin Perfector comes in three shades.
Customer Reviews:
People really like this primer. They say that this product protects their skin from the sun and cold and they can use it over their rosacea.
This primer masks redness and works perfectly under foundation. It doesn’t make people break out and it feels very light and silky on their skin. It helps to reduce flakiness and dryness to give skin a more even appearance.

I used the Stratus primer after I gave up silicones and found it worked better. It gave me a nice glow with my mineral makeup. I have found recently that my Juice Beauty SPF has a similar glowy, oil controlling effect -and might make a good primer too ( with Sun protection)
That is awesome Rebecca 🙂 I have not tried Juice Beauty’s SPF. I might have to try it out this summer 🙂 Does it have any tinting? Or make your skin look white ?
I have used ILIA’s tinted moisturizer, but then I realized it has silicone in it 🙁 I was so disappointed, because I love the way it looks on my skin, but it did make my skin a tad itchy (probably because of the silicone).
It does have a white tint, so if you wear foundation over it, it would be fine. I actually mix the juice beauty with Andalou CC cream to lighten the CC cream and get rid of the white cast. Works well! I think all zinc based sunscreens do look whitish. They should just add a tint, huh?
That is why I like a tinted sunscreen, because it cover the white tint. I literally love the look of ILIA’s tinted moisturizer, and I would like to find something I like just as much. I have used an Andalou BB cream, but it made me look like a ghost!
I have just recently bought a tinted sunscreen from Eco Diva Beauty called Consonant: The Perfect Sunscreen. It is pretty nice, I like the ingredients, no silicone in it like with the ILIA tinted moisturizer. The tint isn’t as nice as ILIA, but it works.
There’s a sunscreen I always wanted to try I that keep hearing about called Pratima Sunscreen (http://www.pratimaskincare.com/sun). Very simple oil free ingredients – but they don’t ship outside of the US 🙁
That sucks when you can’t get a product because they don’t ship to your country 🙁 It is cool that the Pratima sunscreen doesn’t use any oils, I would love to try it one day, but I am outside the US as well.
Have you tried any other sunscreens?
What do you like about the stratus primer? Do you find it too oily?
I have tried a few sunscreens -but found them too oily. The juice beauty is the best so far.
I like the Stratus Primer when I wear it with mineral makeup it blurrs pores and stays oil free. But I did n’t like how the product tended to separate in the container. Then it felt oilier.
I will have to give juice beauty a try 🙂 Do you like any of their other products?
Have you tried Vapour Beauty’s Foundation? I have only tried the Luminous foundation, and I love the way it looks, but it does get a bit oily at the end of the day. I want to try their Soft Focus and see if it is any better.
I haven’t tried any otherJuice Beauty products yet. They’re pricey to buy locally.
I did get samples of lots of Vapour product, but found them too greasy- probably best for drier skins. The foundation didn’t last long on me!I have up trying to make liquid foundation work – it makes my skin even more oily.
The vapour lipsticks are beautiful though.
I haven’t used the Vapour lipsticks yet, but I love their Aura Multi-Use Blush and their Plumping Lip Gloss. I really like the Aura because it is so multi-purpose.
I love the way the Vapour foundation applies, it is so smooth, like a cloud. I love the way it looks too, but within a few hours, it gets oily (at least on my skin).
What is your favorite foundation?
At the moment, I just wear sunscreen daily – the CC/spf combo has a little coverage. Mineral makeup works best for me. I have lots of different brands, but my favourite is Meow Cosmetics. I even use mineral concealer instead of liquid. I like the shorter simpler ingredients list 🙂
oooo Meow Cosmetics, I have not heard of them 🙂
I need to get some better makeup for myself. I will have to give your spf/cc combo a try. I find that most makeup makes my skin feel like it can’t breathe.
