Homemade products, undoubtedly, are better than store-bought ones almost always. It’s true, some high-quality companies produce organic, toxic-free, products you can trust, but if you are on the budget, do-it-yourself is the way to go.

If you have started with a homemade shampoo, or skin creams, or toothpaste, why not expand your chemical-free adventures towards something that will calm your senses and give you the much-deserved skin health and glow? You are right, there’s no reason why not to which is why below I have listed the most potent, soothing bath concoctions: the recipes and when should you use them.

Homemade Bath Oil Recipes

Whichever of the recipes you decide to go with, the principle of making it is the same. Few drops of essential oil are used with a carrier oil, and optionally you use a mild shampoo, or you don’t for the ultimate care of the skin.

The carrier oils are almond oil, olive oil, castor oil, jojoba oil, or sunflower oil.

Mix and store your bath oils into a dark or clear glass jar or bottle (protecting the oils from daylight if using clear glass) shake well and leave to mature for 2 weeks.

Lift-Me-Up Bath Oil

Sometimes you need a kick to jump-start your day and instead of relaxation, to revive your senses and prepare for what’s to come. This revitalizing bath oil will do just that:

  • 4 tablespoons of base carrier oil
  • 12 drops Geranium
  • 6 drops Sandalwood
  • 6 drops Lemon
  • 2 drops Clary Sage

Bath Oil Recipe using Alcohol

Additionally, there is another slightly different way to make bath oils using alcohol. Namely, the alcohol allows the rest of the ingredients to combine and mix with the carrier oil for better distribution. However, you can leave out this step if you don’t want to include alcohol. I tried both ways, so I can tell you that you will get the benefits either way.

Tranquilize-Me Oil

Add 2 to 4 tablespoons to each bath, swish it around and delight in.

  • 3 fl oz (100ml) Castor Oil
  • 4 tablespoons vodka or brandy
  • 10 drops essential oil(s) of your choice

Bath Oil Recipe Using Shampoo

Another type of baths you can do are with a mild shampoo of any kind. These are great if you want the lather-producing properties of the shampoo, however, if you wish to re-moisturize the skin and bring back the hydration to it, you need to use the alcohol and shampoo-based bath oils once a month or avoid them altogether in the beginning.

Lather-Me-Fancy Oil

  • 4 fl oz (125ml) base oil (Sweet Almond Oil or Sunflower Oil work best)
  • 4 tablespoons mild baby shampoo - I like Cetaphil
  • 10 drops essential oil(s) of your choice

Pour the base oil into a glass bottle or jar, add the shampoo and give it a good shake. Add the essential oil, shake again then leave to mature for 2 weeks, not forgetting to protect the oils from daylight. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons to each bath and swish it around.

Tips & Tricks for the Ultimate Bathing Experience

Of course, no remedy, if not done right, can have beneficial effects, which is why based on my experience and other people’s, here are some words of advice to get the most out of it:

  • First of all, keep the aroma in; We all want that magical aroma to last longer because it helps with headaches, muscle tension, and overall relaxation. This is why you need to make sure to close the bathroom door so that you can keep as much of the scent in the room as possible.
  • Bath oils are addictive, but putting too much won’t get rid of a headache quicker and may just end up irritating the skin, so add the oils drop by drop and don’t be tempted to add more than the advised quantity.
  • You need no more than 10 drops per bath. However, this varies whether you are using stronger or more soothing smelling oils. For the stronger ones, for instance, you need 5 drops only, and they include eucalyptus, peppermint, bay, basil, lime, lemon, thyme, rosemary.

Lastly, if you decide to build your own irresistible combo of bath oils and use different ingredients here are some basic guidelines on the properties of each essential oil:

  • Bergamot for depression – 5 drops
  • Chamomile for insomnia or itchy skin – 7 drops
  • Frankincense for sedative, calming and mood sweetening – 8 drops
  • Geranium for relaxing yet uplifting and energizing – 10 drops
  • Jasmine for apathy, stress or fatigue – 8 drops
  • Lavender positive, soothing and relaxing – 10 drops
  • Neroli for hypnotic with antidepressant properties – 8 drops
  • Patchouli for energizing and refreshing – 5 drops
  • Rose for happiness and pleasure very romantic – 10 drops
  • Sandalwood for sensual and mellowing a good aphrodisiac – 8 drops
  • Lemon for oily skin or hair, try experimenting with lemon. It also has antidepressant qualities – 6 drops
  • Peppermint for the stimulation of your mind, this tingly oil will relieve dry skin and hair. It also helps clear up congestion and relieves itching – 7 drops
  • Rosemary for the relief of both mental and physical pain, and it also helps improve memory. This oil is suitable for almost all skin and hair types – 8 drops

    I take a bath every morning. It is my time to really wake up. I love to start my day with my coffee, my audio book, and my bath oil, epson salt and just soak in the morning. It just makes my day and gives me that one moment before the day runs on!
