Commonly called the nectar of the Gods, the sweet, thick liquid made by honeybees has a myriad of health and beauty benefits, plus, it’s delicious and nutritious. Since ancient times, the benefits of honey have been widely known, and it has been used as a folk medicine for ages. Ancient Greeks and Egyptians used honey to treat skin burns and wounds.

Honey, being packed with antioxidants & flavonoids, also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it great for our skin. There are several ways honey can help your skin look healthy, radiant, and beautiful.

Here are just a few of the skin benefits of honey:

1. Honey is a Great Moisturizer

By now, you have probably seen and used dozens of honey-based skincare products. Well, the reason why beauty products use honey as a base is that it deeply and thoroughly moisturizes the skin. Honey is rich in enzymes that enable the sweet golden fluid to quickly trickle into the skin pores and do some serious softening and conditioning from deep within.

How to use honey as a moisturizer? – Apply one tablespoon of honey on dry and clean skin. Let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water.

Efficient Pore Cleanser

Another benefit of honey is that it is a great pore cleanser, and it can also help you get rid of blackheads and even prevent acne. Honey is rich in antioxidants, as well as antibacterial and antiseptic properties. When applied on your face, it opens up the skin pores and cleans the oily dirt. It also hydrates and tightens your skin pores for a clear complexion.

How to use honey as pore cleanser? – Mix one tablespoon of raw honey with two tablespoons of coconut oil. Apply to clean, dry skin, massage gently for a couple of minutes. Rinse with cool water.

Honey is Beneficial for Anti-Aging

One of the most extraordinary benefits of honey for the skin is its anti-aging properties. Honey is full of probiotics, nutrients, enzymes, and antioxidants, which make it a very efficient aid in anti-aging treatments. Honey is excellent for hydrating and plumping the skin, and preventing wrinkles. As an antioxidant, it provides a soothing effect without irritating the skin, and it will help you replenish skin moisture without making your skin oily.

How to use honey for anti-aging? – Mix honey and yogurt with cinnamon and nutmeg. Add lemon juice and warm water to complete the paste. Apply the mask on a clean and dry face, leave it for 10 minutes. Rinse off with cool water.

Gentle Exfoliator

We all know the archenemy of beautiful and glowing skin is accumulated dead skin cells. Artificial exfoliators are often bad for your skin, as they can cause itchiness and irritation. Honey is a gentle exfoliator, it doesn’t harm the skin at all, and it helps you get a brighter complexion. Just by gently rubbing honey on your face and skin, you will get rid of dead skin cells, and get that silky effect.

How to use honey for exfoliating? – Mix two tablespoons of honey with one tablespoon of baking soda. Splash water to your face or body, add the paste and gently rub in a circular motion for a couple of minutes. Rinse well.

Acne and Pimples

It may surprise you that something as simple as honey can help decrease the occurrence of super annoying acne and pimples. Honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help remove excess oil from the surface of the skin, as well as clear out blockages or clogged pores.

How to use honey for acne & pimples? – Apply raw honey to the affected areas. Leave for 15-20 minutes. Rinse off with cold water.

Honey Helps with Scar Removal

As we mentioned above, the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians used honey to treat wounds and scars. Well, these folks were super smart, as today, honey is proven to be beneficial and super useful in wound treatment. Honey is a natural antiseptic and moisturizer, that’s why it minimizes inflammation, repairs damaged skin, and speeds up the healing process.

How to use honey for scar removal- Mix one tablespoon of raw honey with one tablespoon coconut or olive oil. Apply the mixture to the scars and gently massage with the fingertips in a circular motion for two minutes. Cover your face with a warm washcloth, and leave it until cool.

Honey is a Natural Skin Hydrant

Another skin benefit of honey is its hydrating and moisturizing properties. Being a natural humectant, honey draws moisture into the skin from the air and prevents dry skin.

The natural emollients contained in honey increase the water content and reduce dryness in the skin. Using honey as a natural hydrant will help you keep your skin radiant, soft, and glowing, even during harsh winter days.

Helps with Sunburn

Every one of us has at least once been through the excruciating pain of sunburns. Honey, being a natural powerhouse product, is also an excellent home remedy for treating sunburns. Honey helps with sunburns, by decreasing inflammation and providing nutrition to the damaged tissues.

How to use honey for sunburn- Mix one part raw honey with two parts pure Aloe Vera gel. Apply to the affected area.

Conclusion

Bottom line is there are tons of skin benefits of honey. Just by applying honey on the face and skin for a couple of minutes, there will be visible benefits. Using honey for the skin can only be a good idea, and why wouldn’t it be, it’s a natural, easy, and inexpensive beauty treatment.
