This overlooked weed is an effective and natural way to treat acne, scarring, dryness, wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, and other acute and chronic skin conditions. In this article, I’ll share the top 6 dandelion skincare recipes for a simple but powerful addition to your skincare routine.
Dandelion Skincare Benefits
Once considered a pesky weed can hold potent ingredients that reverse signs of aging and sun damage. Here’s a bit of the science behind why we love our dandelion skincare recipes.
Dandelion sap applied topically to acne can inhibit microbial infection and reduce unwanted redness and inflammation. Its high vitamin C content is ideal for treating once permanent scars. Studies show that dandelion leaf and flower extract protect the skin against harmful UVB radiation (sunlight exposure) when applied just before or immediately after being in the sun.
Antioxidants: High in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, dandelions are a great topical treatment for fighting free radicals and signs of aging skin. Antioxidants also help plump and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Minerals: Dandelions contain potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. Their roots are particularly rich in mineral concentration. These minerals will hydrate the tissues and support the functions of the skin.
Vitamins: Vitamin A, B6, C, and K help support the skin’s function and help fight free radicals.
Anti-inflammatory: As a natural anti-inflammatory, dandelion is also perfect for sensitive skin or chronic skin conditions like rosacea and eczema. The increased blood flow and impurities removal are how dandelion allows the skin to become better at restoring itself. The increase of blood also helps wipe away irritants, allowing the skin to look clearer and more even in tone and texture.
Anti-fungal and Germicidal: The milk or sap from the stem of the flower is useful in treating skin diseases that are caused by microbial or fungal infections. Its high alkaline levels help fight off infection in the skin’s tissues, including itching, eczema, and the bacteria that promote acne.
Dandelion Skincare Recipes
Now for the fun stuff! Reap the beautifying and restorative benefits of dandelion with one (or a couple) of our dandelion skincare recipes.
Dandelion Skincare Body/Massage Oil
This recipe is glorious on its own, but dandelion-infused oil will be the base of many of our DIY dandelion skincare recipes. Oftentimes, the only thing to adjust will be the carrier oil. In the massage recipe, we recommend jojoba – but in others, you will see avocado, coconut, or almond oil. Simply follow this recipe to infuse your oil of choice.
- Add ½ cup dried dandelion flowers and 1 cup jojoba oil to a heatproof glass canning jar.
- Place jar in a shallow pot of water to create a double-boiler.
- Keep over medium-low heat for up to 2 hours for the dandelions to infuse.
- Strain the dandelion-infuse oil into a 2 oz jelly jar and keep it in the fridge.
- Store in a massage oil bottle for easy use.
Dandelion Skincare Mist
- Add one cup of dried dandelion herb or 2-3 whole plants to half a quart jar.
- Fill the jar with boiling water, leaving an inch of room to spare.
- Let your mixture stand for 3-4 days.
- Strain your mixture and add it to a dark glass spray bottle.
- Spritz your detoxifying dandelion tincture on your freshly washed face and in your hair daily.
Whipped Dandelion Moisturizer
- Add ½ cup dried dandelion flowers and 1 cup coconut oil to a heatproof glass canning jar.
- Place jar in a shallow pot of water to create a double-boiler.
- Keep over medium-low heat for up to 2 hours for the dandelions to infuse.
- Strain the dandelion-infuse oil into a 2 oz jelly jar and keep it in the fridge.
- Using a hand mixer, beat the chilled coconut oil for about five minutes or until it’s light and fluffy.
Dandelion Skincare Body Cream
- 0.3 ounces of stearic acid
- 0.6 ounces emulsifying wax
- 1.85 ounces dandelion infused oil (from the previous recipe)
- Place all ingredients above into a small make-shift double-boiler using 8oz jelly jars.
- Heat on low until the oil mixture is completely melted together.
- Remove and let rest to room temp and add the following ingredients.
- 6 ounces of distilled water
- .6 ounces preservative (I used Leucidal)
- 50-100 drops of essential oil of your choice I like 50 drops Vanilla and 50 drops Patchouli.
- As you stir, the mixture will emulsify into a luscious body cream. Store in a cool, dry place.
Dandelion Lotion Bar
Lotion bars are formulated in a way that they are solid at room temperature, but that will begin to melt when warmed with body heat. They can be used at any time, but an ideal time is right after showering when your skin is normally warmer and ready for absorbing the oils in the lotion bar.
- In a double-boiler on medium heat Combine ½ Cup of Beeswax, ¼ Cup of Shea Butter, ¼ Cup of Coconut oil, and 3 teaspoons of Dandelion-infused avocado oil.
- Stir occasionally until everything is melted and mixed.
- Pour into bar molds and let sit until completely cool.
- Place in the freezer for up to 30 minutes and the dandelion lotion bars should pop right out and are ready for use.
Dandelion Skincare Scrub for Acne
- Make a tea using 1 tablespoon dandelion and 1 tablespoon calendula. Store the liquid as a facial spray or drink but this recipe calls for the remaining tea leaves and flowers.
- In a blender or grinder mix remaining tea leaves with 2 tablespoons of raw honey and a teaspoon of turmeric.
- Use as a daily facial cleanser and store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Dandelion Is Nature’s Beauty Hack
These recipes are the best, but there are numerous ways to add this magical flower into your skincare routine. Grind it with coffee for a body scrub, turn it into a salve, or use it in your hot water for an anti-aging steaming facial. The possibilities are endless! But the results are always radiant.
