Marula oil has a high content of Omega 9 and a generous amount of Omega 6 fatty acids. Find out what omega fatty acids do here.
Vegetable and seed oils are very compatible with the skin. Our skin is made up of lipid bilayers that are very picky about what they allow in.
Our skins lipid bilayer is how our skin defends itself and how it retains moisture. Oils can penetrate the skin because they are similar to the lipids that make up our skin.
Marula Oil is Best For
- Dry, chapped skin
- Sensitive skin
- Sun damaged skin
Why Marula Oil?
Marula oil works well on dry, chapped, sensitive and sun damaged skin. It helps reduce redness and minimize scars. It protects against environmental aggressors, boosts cellular activity, reverses photodamage, and hydrates at the deepest levels of the skin.
This oil can be used from head to toe, on skin, hair and nails and it has a shelf life of 2 - 3 years.
The wonderful thing about Marula oil is that it contains beneficial fatty acids as well as antioxidants such as vitamin E that are excellent for the skin. Some studies even that show Marula oil can help with hyper-pigmentation (source). These attributes make Marula oil a wonderful anti-aging oil.
How to Incorporate Marula Oil into Your Skin Care Routine
- If you are using Marula oil for the first time, try using it at night after washing your face. Apply 3 - 4 drops to your entire face and neck. Nighttime is when skin repair is happening, so this is a great time to add a nourishing facial oil to your routine. If you find you like it, try using it in the morning as well.
- Add a couple drops to your cleanser for more hydration and to offset the drying effect of washing your face.
- Pregnant women can use 3 - 4 drops on their belly 2 - 3 times a day to prevent stretch marks.
- Use as a moisturizer for the fine lines around your eyes.
- Add a couple drops to your face cream.
- Add a few drops to your facial mask.
- Use it in skin care recipes.
- Use it on your lips as a moisturizer.
- Use it to soothe the skin after chemical peels, glycolic acid treatments, or Retin-A usage.
Anti-Aging
- The major causes of skin aging are dehydration and free radical damage. Marula oil is effective against both these causes.
- Marula oil contains a high concentration of stearic and palmitic acids that form a protective barrier on the skin to prevent water loss. This leads to a plumping of fine lines and wrinkles, reducing their appearance.
- Marula oil is also high in antioxidants (60% more than Argan oil) that help repair and reverse damage caused by the elements. Minerals and fatty acids in Marula oil help retain the skins elasticity. [Read: Marula Oil vs Argan Oil]
Hair Benefits
- Pampers the hair with rich moisture. It is lightweight, offers fast absorption and gives your hair a silky, shiny feel.
- Seals, coats, and smooths the hair cuticle, creating a satin finish that won't flatten out your style or leave your hair looking greasy.
How to use Marula Oil on Your Hair
- Apply 1 drop for normal hair, 2 - 3 drops for coarse hair and 4 - 6 drops for extremely coarse hair. Start at the ends and work your way up.
- Use as a pre-shampoo treatment.
- Apply to clean damp hair before blow-drying or styling.
- Massage on your scalp every other night to help with scalp issues.
