Making your own essential oil room spray is a rewarding experience, you get to completely customize and mix your favorite scents while avoiding toxic ingredients that are in many conventional room sprays.
Odor sprays such as Febreze contain dozens of chemical compounds that are not healthy for us, our kids, or our pets to be breathing in. Some of these cancer-linked chemicals include 1,3-Dichloro-2-propanol, Acetaldehyde, "Fragrance," Propylene Glycol, and others.
In this article, you will learn how to make your own basic essential oil room spray, as well as a handful of different scent combinations you can make.
Benefits of Essential Oil Room Sprays
Room sprays made from essential oils are non-toxic. Essential oils are not only safe to breathe in, but they also have a positive effect on your body -helping with different conditions including cold, flu, emotional upsets, stress and much more.
Essential oils offer a long lasting scent that will fill and stay in the air, as well as on linens, curtains, and carpet throughout the day.
Making your own room spray is also super affordable, once you have your supplies, you will be able to make batch after batch of essential oil room spray.
DIY Room Spray using Essential Oils
An essential oil room spray has very minimal ingredients, basically water and essential oils - but you also need something to help the oil and water stay mixed - known as an emulsifier.
The recipes I am sharing use an 8 oz glass spray bottle. I like using 8 oz because the bottles are generally easier to find with a hand pump rather than a finger pump. This makes it easier to spritz a room quickly. Avoid using a plastic bottle, as the essential oils can break it down.
Natural Emulsifiers:
- Vinegar (I recommend Bragg's)
- Salt - sea salt, Himalayan salt, Epsom salt.
- Aloe vera gel - (I like Amara Beauty)
- Alcohol - such as vodka
- Witch hazel - ( I use Thayers)
Supplies:
- An 8 oz glass spray bottle (I like these Amber Glass Mist Bottles by the brand 1790)
- Water – Distilled water is best, but you can also use boiled and cooled filtered water. Tip - for even more scent, use a plant hydrosol instead of water.
- Your choice of a natural emulsifier
- Essential oils
Steps:
If you add your essential oils first, you won't end up using too much water and not having room for your essential oils.
- Add 120 drops of essential oils to your 8 oz bottle.
- Add 2 tablespoons of your chosen emulsifier
- Fill the rest of your 8 oz spray bottle with water.
- Put the top on the bottle and shake well before use.
A Note about Dilution:
Most of the recipes for DIY room sprays I have found on the internet use a very low concentration of essential oils - around 1%. I don't find this strong enough for a spray that I am using to scent a whole room.
My recipes are almost a 2% essential oil dilution.
Where to Source Your Essential Oils
Did you know that some essential oil companies dilute or alter their essential oils? I want you to have access to exceptional quality essential oils, which is why I have taken years to find the best essential oil company.

Hi Maria,
Thanks for the tips! I am a fan of DIY stuff so this makes it nice to include on my list. How long is the usual shelf life of this? If I intend to mass produce it, say, for a gift on Christmas, it would be good to know until when they are good to be used. Do they maintain the quality of “smell” they have even if kept longer? Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the comment and question Pitin,
Your DIY Room Spray will have a longer shelf life if you store your blend in a dark glass bottle, this will prevent breakdown of the molecules of the oils. So, properly stored you can get about 10 months out of them. The scent will stay strong and beautiful!
Hi there!
Would you advise against making the spray using a RMO blend? I’m wondering if I’d have to use the entire bottle to achieve the desired scent since they’re pre-diluted. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Jenny, Thanks for the question!
I have used RMO’s blends in different room sprays, they work just as well as your own blend, the scent is still very concentrated so you don’t have to use the whole bottle. Just use about 20-30 drops. If you want more scent just add 5 more drops at a time. Hope this helps 🙂
