Why Does Salt Water Make Hair Curly
Have you ever wondered why you look and feel so awesome after a day of swimming at the beach?
It’s all about the salt.
Everyone knows that going to the beach is good for you. The salt in the water helps to detoxify the skin, reduce swelling, and treat cuts and scrapes. Using salt water for medical purposes even has its own term, which is called thalassotherapy.
Salt water has the same effect on your hair and scalp. It soothes the dry and flaky scalp and promotes hair growth.
So why does salt water make hair curly?
Trichologist Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips says our hair contains water which makes it elastic and moisturized. Seawater is osmotic, and it tends to leach the water out of the hair strands. Because of this, our hair becomes looser and has more texture.
How to Use your Sea Salt Spray
Apply your salt spray to damp hair to style, and apply to dry hair to revive and refresh your hair in the afternoon.
How to Make The Best Sea Salt Spray At Home
You need a few basic ingredients when making your own sea salt spray: salts, oils, and water.
Sea salt adds texture to the mix. Epsom salts are added to add volume and help condition the hair. Oils like coconut and avocado help moisturize the hair and let the sea salt stick better to it.
Most people also add essential oils to their DIY sea salt spray to make it smell good. Others even add aloe vera gel to help protect the hair and promote hair growth.
So here are our five of our favorite mixes and blends for the best sea salt spray.

Easiest Salt Spray Recipe for Men
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp Dead Sea salt
- ½ tsp coconut-scented conditioner
- A dab of unscented hair gel
- 8 oz water
Men have needs too! And I’m sure they will appreciate it if you create their own mix of salt spray.
This one is perfect since it doesn’t have a strong scent. Just make sure not to add scented hair gels since it might disrupt with the conditioner’s scent.
You know the drill. Mix them all together and shake before use. You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil if your man has an oily or sensitive scalp. It also doesn’t weigh down hair and holds up any style pretty well.
Epsom Salt Hair Spray Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons Epsom salt
- 1 cup hot water
- 1/3 cup aloe vera gel
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 2 tablespoons Conditioner
This is a great salt spray for the hair because Epsom salts are high in magnesium. Combine all the ingredients and mix well. Store your mixture in the refrigerator and shake vigorously before use. In hot temperatures, forgo using oil in this recipe and use honey instead.
Tips for Maximizing Sea Salt Sprays
It is best to apply sea salt sprays on hair while it’s damp or dry. It also performs better on unwashed hair, making it easier for the spray to grip onto the hair cuticles easily.
For best results, towel dry your hair and spritz on the spray before blow-drying. For dry hair, apply the spray after putting on any serum and heat protectants.
Try not to use sea salt spray too much if you have hair extensions. The salt in the spray may damage your hair extensions as it doesn’t have the natural sebum our scalps produce.
