Waxing VS Sugaring-What’s the Better Choice?

November 14, 2016 Maria 4 Comments

    Sugaring or Waxing?

When it comes to hair removal, the most important thing to consider is what is best for the skin. Often, we don't consider this very important concern.

As a skincare professional, I have no doubt that Sugaring is the more gentle form of hair removal for the skin as compared to Waxing.

While both will remove unwanted hair, Sugaring is going to leave your skin in much better condition after epilation of the hair. Sugaring is far superior to waxing because it:

  • Softens the skin
  • Hydrates the skin
  • Will not burn the skin
  • Doesn't leave residue or sticky clean up

 Sugaring VS Waxing- The Details

Waxing is a popular method of hair removal, and it is fast and effective, but how does it compare to Sugaring?

Ingredients:

Waxing

Waxing is made of different ingredients that are not as gentle to the skin. Wax is made of resins and preservatives, and some of these ingredients are very hazardous to the skin. These resins include ingredients like:

  • TOCOPHERYL ACETATE: Has many concerns when used on the skin or inhaled including, allergies, immuno-toxicity, Cancer, Eco-toxicology, and contamination concerns. This ingredient is rated hazardous.
  • GLYCERYL ROSINATE: This Resin is easily absorbed through the skin and has many adverse effects to the immune system, including chemical additive build up.

It is always best to avoid these types of ingredients when it comes to skincare and your health.

Sugaring

The ingredients many Sugaring products consist of are natural and nourishing for the skin. These ingredients are:

  • SUGAR: When in its raw, unrefined state, sugar can be a great exfoliant for the skin helping prevent ingrown hairs. Sugar is also a natural preservative, so there is no need to add chemical preservatives.
  • LEMON: Similar to sugar, Lemon will exfoliate dead skin cells. Lemon is also wonderful at toning the skin and hydrating the follicles.
  • CALENDULA: This flower has the ability to soothe irritated skin and hydrate chapped, flaky skin.

Sugaring products are made of very natural ingredients without having to add chemical preservatives. The ingredients will nourish the skin and absorb healthy beneficial properties.

Pros & Cons

Waxing

Pros

  • Waxing is an easy procedure to have done or do it yourself with the help of wax strips.
  • Waxing can be a very fast treatment and many Spas offer waxing at a good price.
  • Home Waxing equipment is usually fairly affordable giving you the ability to preform the treatment at home.

Cons

  • Waxing is a messy job and you need to be careful not to get wax all over the place. Wax is very hard to clean off materials like sheets and the floor.
  • The clean up of wax on the body is also difficult. You will be sticky and the wax adheres to the skin, leaving behind residue.
  • Wax pots are not bacteria free. They harbour bacteria and need to use a clean spatula each time. There is a major concern of contamination.
  • Wax cannot be applied to an area more than twice at the most. Tweezers are commonly used to get the leftover hairs the wax missed.
  • Wax will cause early regrowth due to broken hairs. Waxing can leave 15% - 30% breakage behind. This problem is due by the wax used. Since wax hardens on the hair, it has the tendency to break it off at the surface, rather than pull it out.

Sugaring

Pros

  • Sugar paste can be cleaned up easily with water, so you will never leave a Sugaring treatment feeling sticky.
  • Sugaring paste is applied at body temperature & will not burn your skin.
  • Sugar cannot adhere to live skin cells. Live skin cells are wet, and because Sugar Paste is water soluble, it will not adhere to live skin cells. This is great for the hair removal process because it is less traumatic and will not harm the skin.
  • A single batch of Sugar Paste can be used over & over on different parts of your body then discarded after your treatment.
  • Sugaring Paste is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. Sugar naturally helps control cross contamination and cannot breed bacteria.

Cons

  • Sugaring requires more preparation than waxing. It has to be Kneaded like bread to get the right consistency before you can use it.
  • Sugaring takes a bit of time to learn the technique. It is not as simple as applying wax and a strip.

You can learn the preparation and technique of Sugaring in this step by step video

Conclusion

When you consider all the pros and cons, Sugaring is the best for the skin. You can achieve smoothe, soft skin without a sticky mess or risking burning or major skin irritation that will require time to heal as with hot Wax.

Sugaring is far more gentle on to the skin, and doesn't require any post treatment as waxing does. Sugaring has ingredients that will nourish  the skin rather than strip and cause trauma.

Wow! I have never heard of sugaring before. It does sound so much nicer than the waxing. I have reactions sometimes to the wax residue and it takes forever and a day for my body to stop being irritated (okay, maybe an hour or two, but definitely a long time). I would love to place healthier ingredients on my skin. I truly liked how you gave the pro’s, con’s, and ingredients of each.

This is really neat. I’ve never heard of sugaring before but I’ve tried just about every other form of hair removal and didn’t really like any of them. I’ve tried shaving, epilating, and waxing. Epilating and waxing are both painful and I was disappointed to see with both that the hair started growing back in as little as a week. About how long does it take with sugaring? Also if this is so much better for your skin why isn’t it offered in waxing salons or is it just something you have to ask for?

    Good questions Jessica,

We often go through all hair removal options without satisfaction. Sugaring is offered a lot more in Salons that are more aware of the skin and not just the hair removal service. Its gaining popularity, but the reason most Salons use wax is because its cheaper to buy resin products.

Sugaring will keep you hair free longer because it doesn’t cause breakage like waxing does, so rather than being left with broken hairs that grow quickly, you can achieve full epilation of all the hair.

    Hope that answers your questions!

    All the best,

    Maria.

    Thanks Kerri,

Yes a lot of people have a bad reaction to waxing, more than likely because of the ingredients and the fact that it really can burn the skin. The left over residue is also a problem, leaving you sticky and leaving resins on the skin longer. Glad you enjoyed the article.

    All the best,

    Maria.
