Using Essential Oils for Skin Care

October 14, 2016 by Jessica 6 Comments

Whatever problem you have with your skin, you can be sure every single one of them can be helped by using a particular nature’s miracle – essential oils. Acne, blackouts, large pores, wrinkles – you name it because there’s an oily cure for anything.

What’s most important is that essential oils can help with delaying and reducing the signs of skin aging. Some of them you might already have in your home, while others are waiting for you in a department store or online, so here’s how to incorporate essential oils into your skin care routine.

What’s hot and what’s… a carrier?

Let’s start with some basic rules of using the oils. When browsing through the recipes you may stumble upon the term hot oil so you should know what it means. Simply put, hot oils are the ones that cause a warming sensation when applied to the skin.

That doesn’t have to be a sign of irritation or your skin’s sensitivity; it’s just how cinnamon, lemongrass, oregano, thyme, clove, and some others oils work. That’s why patch test procedure is recommended before the first usage. If nothing happens within two hours, proceed using the oil normally.

If there’s a rash or burning sensation, mix the essential oil with a carrier oil. Carrier oils are vegetable oils used to dilute hot oils. Coconut, grapeseed, or olive oil make great carrier oils and, don’t worry – they won’t dilute the effect of the essential oils. They’ll only make them comfortable to your skin and reduce waste.

On the other hand, essential oils are the perfect ingredient for any skin care product. That’s why you should always opt for organic skin care and be sure your face cream, serum, and makeup remover consist of the nourishing, healthy and all-natural ingredients such as essential oils.

Use them for your feet

The world might be in your hands, but your feet are the ones that carry you through it, so you better make sure you take good care of them. Neroli essential oil skin benefits are well known. Produced from the blossom of the bitter orange tree, Neroli oil is quite beneficial for the blood circulation so it’s a must-have ingredient in your foot bath.

You can use it to make anti-microbial foot powder which will keep your feet cool to prevent sweating as well as absorb any sweat your feet produce.

Use them for your face

You can add nourishing melissa essential oil to your standard moisturizer or add it to a spray bottle filled with water and use it to rejuvenate and refresh your skin. It’s broadly used in hand and face creams as well as in lip balms, all due to its restorative function.

If you thought oils aren’t for your oily skin, you were wrong. There’s an oil for every skin type and condition so choose wisely.

Treat various skin conditions

Although it can help with depression, perspiration, and digestion problems, melissa essential oil benefits go even beyond that. This wondrous oil coming from the plant Melissa officinalis or lemon balm is great for treating many more or less serious skin conditions. Think eczema, herpes, allergies, and so on. Since it has antibacterial properties, it can serve as prevention for pimples.

You can even use essential oils for warts prevention and treatment – think frankincense or oregano oil. If you opt for oregano oil, consider mixing it with a coconut oil – it’s a carrier oil that will dilute the hot oil such oregano is.

What you need to pay attention to?

There aren’t enough regulations considering the usage of terms like pure, natural, or even organic. This simply means that the manufacturers can advertise a product as natural and healthy but still put harmful ingredients such as pollutants or adulterants in it. This is partially possible because of a lack of industry standards.

In order to make a high-quality essential oil, a manufacturer shouldn’t treat the plant with chemical pesticides or herbicides and each plant has to grow indigenously so that’s why truly organic products cost more. So, once again – you need to be extra careful when purchasing an essential oil and always opt for secure, organic products.
Whatever skin type you have, you can’t go wrong with using essential oils since it’s all-natural, healthy way to treat your skin. Test it, mix it, and see what works best for you – your skin will be thankful.
