Want to learn what all the talk is about when it comes to bentonite clay? in this article, we will discuss the many skin and health benefits of bentonite clay.
Clay has been a staple ingredient in skincare for as long as we have been treating our skin. I personally love clay and its versatile ability.
Clay is used to draw out toxins while providing the skin with nutrient-rich minerals. Clay has the ability to clean, exfoliate and promote blood circulation to the skin. Helping smooth, detox and rejuvenate for a healthy glow.
Clays are wonderful for all skin types. You may find great relief with sensitive itchy skin using a clay to help absorb and pull away irritants while calming and soothing the skin with its mineral potency.
You can also get relief from the overproduction of sebum, or improve dryness by increasing blood flow.
Pretty amazing isn’t it?
Bentonite Clay For the Skin
Best for: Oily / Combination Skin
One of the best clays for oily skin. Bentonite clay has a high absorption quality and is excellent for pulling toxins and oils. Bentonite is also used in poultices drawing out irritants and healing the skin. it is made of a combination of montmorillonite and volcanic ash. Bentonite clay is even strong enough to be used as a deodorant, but still gentle enough to keep your skin healthy.
Tip:
Treat your skin with bentonite clay to remove oily sebum. Instead of applying a moisturizer to your face after, hydrate your skin with a hydrating toner. This way you will not re-apply oil to your skin but be sure to restore any lost moisture.
Treating Eczema with Bentonite Clay
Many people have found that using bentonite clay has greatly improved their eczema. Finding relief with a simple, non-expensive natural ingredient.
Apply bentonite clay to your eczema until you get relief. Most people find it is soothed after their first application. Continue to use your clay anytime you feel the discomfort of eczema flare-ups.
Treating Acne With Bentonite Clay
Acne is a very difficult skin condition to treat. It is hard to find one “cure-all” solution. Bentonite clay has worked for many people with mild adult or youth acne. It has been very beneficial to clearing up cystic acne and overproduction of sebum.
I highly recommend trying it, However, there are those who have not had success. Some skin types do not benefit. We don’t really understand why it will work for some and not others, but in my opinion, it is extremely beneficial to try.
Simply include a clay mask in your skincare regime DAILY, if not twice daily at the beginning, and tapper down to every second day after a few weeks.
Other Skin Benefits
Bentonite clay will work with any skin type, and I highly recommend doing a clay mask twice a week. Clay will help;
- Minimize pores
- Smooth skins texture
- Relieve heavy bags under the eyes
- Pull away impurities
DIY Bentonite Clay Mask
The best way to purchase clay is in its dry form. This way you will get more for your money. It also allows you to make your own clay masks using whatever ingredients you desire.
You will want to mix your clay 1 – 3 parts. (Example, 1 cup powder clay to 3 cups water.) This will fully hydrate the clay. I recommend having a more watery consistency so you can brush on your mask. It will also dry faster.
Its that simple. You now have your own clay mask.

Adding other Ingredients
After you have formed your clay you can add other beneficial ingredients. This can be really fun. Here are some helpful ideas:
Use tea infused water instead of straight water! How cool is this? Mix up a batch of clay with a herbal infusion for your skin. Lemon, green tea, or nettle are going to give your skin a rich bonus of mineral activity!
For Moisturizing- add a natural moisturizer to your clay mix:
- Honey
- Aloe Vera Gel
- jojoba Oil
- Vitamin E capsule
For Exfoliating- add natural exfoliates to your clay mix:
- Oatmeal
- Sea Salt
- Epsom Salt
- Coffee grounds
For Acne- add acne fighters to your clay mix:
- Rosemary essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Oregano oil (tiny, tiny drop)
- Vitamin C powder
Other Great Tips
Always mix your added ingredients to your already prepared clay mix fresh upon use. Clay is great on its own and can be stored in a jar with a lid, but your high powered additives should be mixed in the same day. Fresh is best!
Do not use your serum under a clay mask. Clay is like a sponge and will absorb your serum and waste it. Apply your serum after you wash your mask off and tone your skin.
Acne-prone skin types should try the less is the best approach. Use your clay mask, wash and tone with a hydrator. Try not to do too much more. If you find your skin is drying out too much with just a clay mask and toner, mix in honey or jojoba oil.

Clay is full of minerals and has the ability to absorb toxins, hold them in suspension and carry them out of the body. When purchased from a reliable source you can take bentonite clay to help with many internal problems.
You can take bentonite clay to help with;
- Digestion trouble, gas, bloating and constipation.

To a Bright and Beautiful you,
Maria.
Bentonite saved the day! We had water pouring into a foundation and heard from another contractor that this was the product to use. We dug a ditch and poured a bentonite slurry wall and it finally stopped.
wow, that is amazing!
I am thrilled to see the recommendation to use a clay mask daily for acne! I tried that approach with a bentonite clay mask and realized it was having a positive effect on my skin but I wasn’t sure whether that was too much and I stopped. I will be resuming that regime as soon as I can.
I found this site while looking for any tips on whether bentonite clay could be incorporated into a moisturizer. This question crossed my mind after seeing the calming effect another bentonite clay mask had on my freshly washed face. Any thoughts?
Hi Colette, thanks for stopping in. As long as your skin isn’t getting red, irritated or dry, using a mask every day is perfectly fine. I have recently used a moisturizer that had clay in it, you can read my review of it here.
What would be an example of a hydrating toner to apply after using bentonite clay?
Hi Maria, a hydrating toner would be something that would include hydrating ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Read more about toners.
