Tria Beauty Laser Reviews : Everything You Need to Know

January 9, 2016 by Andrea 28 Comments

Are you thinking of purchasing a laser for wrinkle treatment? Want to learn more about Tria’s Beauty Lasers? In this review, I will share with you everything you need to know about Laser Resurfacing Technology and how it works on the skin as well as everything you need to know about Tria Beauty’s Age-Defying Laser and Age-Defying Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser.

There is a lot of hype about these laser products and I want to get to the bottom of whether they are worth their expensive price tag.

Before we get to the reviews of the actual Tria products, we will discuss:

  • What laser resurfacing is
  • The different types of laser resurfacing
  • At-home laser treatments
  • In-office laser treatments
  • Does laser resurfacing actually work?

We will then get into the reviews of the Age-Defying Laser and the Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser is an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Laser resurfacing uses beams of light to cause damage to skin cells and thus stimulate collagen production, leading to firmer, plumper skin and less fine lines.

Using a laser to resurface the skin is a fairly new technology and is being praised as the new miracle in wrinkle reduction and skin tone enhancement. There are 2 types of laser skin resurfacing techniques: Ablative and Non-Ablative.

beautiful woman

Ablative vs Non-Ablative

Ablative

  • More invasive but also more effective
  • destroys the outer layer of the skin
  • see results with one treatment
  • good for deep scars and wrinkles
  • skin is left red for a week to several months
  • side effects can include: itching, swelling, redness, and hyper-pigmentation

Non-Ablative

  • works on the under-layers of the skin, leaving the top layer intact
  • creates microscopic wounds in the under-layer of the skin, stimulating collagen rebuilding
  • tightens the skin
  • minimal irritation and little downtime
  • requires multiple treatments
  • results are gradual and progressive

Tria uses a non-ablative fractional laser to work on the skin

A Non-Ablative Fractional Laser creates microscopic wounds in the lower levels of the skin, leaving the surrounding skin intact. There is minimal irritation and little downtime. The sensation feels like multiple pinpricks. As the microscopic wounds in the under-layers heal, new skin emerges. This new skin will be smooth and re-textured. Your skin is tricked into thinking it needs to heal itself. So instead of applying topical collagen, you are getting your body to produce its own collagen.

Non-ablative treatments are not as effective as ablative treatments, but the side effects are minimized. Ablative technologies require a week to 10 days of downtime, whereas non-ablative will only produce redness in the face for a few days.

Ablative will help heal deep acne scars and deep wrinkles. Non-ablative is more suited to minor scars and fine lines. Non-ablative takes more time to see results but you don’t have to deal with a severely reddened face. Non-Ablative will leave the top layer of your skin alone, it works in the deeper layers of your skin. Ablative removes the top layers of the skin. This causes irritation and redness and a long healing time.

At-Home Laser Treatments

Laser skin resurfacing used to be an expensive treatment that would have to be performed by a dermatologist. In 2014 the FDA cleared the first non-ablative fractional laser for personal, full-face use on all skin types.

In order for you to get results, you must follow the directions exactly and you must be diligent, it will only work if you stay consistent. The Tria lasers take 12 weeks (doing 5 days a week of treatments) to see results.

At-home laser treatments are less intense than the treatments you would get at the dermatologist (246 times less powerful that one a dermatologist might use). 12 weeks of Tria laser treatments are equal to 2 trips to the dermatologist.

With the at-home laser treatments, you have to wait more time to see results, and the treatment is a sort of one-size-fits-all approach.

In-Office Laser Treatments

When getting laser treatments at a dermatologist office the doctor can tailor the treatment to your specific needs, and it requires less time to see results.

You are likely to see results after only 2 – 3 treatments spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart. When I do the math, this is the same amount of time as with Tria (about 12 weeks), the only difference is, you have had 3 in-office treatments versus 60 at-home treatments.

A trip to the dermatologist can cost anywhere from $600 – $1500 per treatment. The price tag of an at-home laser (around $500) is worth it, considering how expensive it is to get laser treatments by a dermatologist.

wrinkles

Does laser technology actually get rid of wrinkles?

Laser treatments will work because the technology has been tested and been proven to be effective. Many people will see the results. With that said, don’t expect your skin to become totally transformed. This is not going to take 20 years off your face. It would be more realistic to expect it to take 5 years off your face. I think many people expect complete transformation and are disappointed when they don’t get it.

Buying an at-home laser is worth it if you have the money and you want to enhance the texture of your skin in the comfort of your own home. The price of a Tria laser is a fraction of the cost of professional laser treatments.

I don’t live somewhere where I can see a dermatologist, I would have to travel to get treatments. For me, having a device in my home is much more convenient and affordable. I also like the fact that this at-home laser does not make your skin look terrible while you are treating it (unlike dermatologist treatments.)

At-home laser treatments are best for early signs of sun damage and fine lines, or mild acne scars. If you have deep acne scarring, it is best to get professional treatments.

I have not tried the Tria Beauty lasers, nor have I received in-office laser treatments, but I have spent hours researching the technology as well as reading reviews on these products. I am basically doing all of the research you would want to do before making a purchasing decision. Unlike many other reviews you will read on the internet, I have not been given a free product to use so that I can tell you all how much I love it.  My motive is to provide you with a comprehensive knowledge base so that you can make an informed decision.

Tria Age-Defying Laser Review

Basic Product Info

The Tria Beauty Age-defying laser is a hand-held, at-home laser treatment tool for use on your face. The weight is 2.2 pounds and the height is 7.7 inches tall. The device charges via a charging dock that plugs into the wall.

The Age-Defying Laser has been created in collaboration with dermatologists and plastic surgeons. It uses the same technology as professional laser treatments. It is safe and easy to use. Tria states that you will start seeing results in as little as 2 weeks. The treatment lasts 12 weeks and then you take a rest for 4 weeks to let your collagen rebuild.

tria age defying laser parts

Laser Intensity and Treatment Protocol

There are 3 levels of intensity for the laser. One training level and 2 treatment levels. Most people start with the training level and work their way up to the highest level.

In the US the treatment protocol is 5 days a week, with 2 days off, for 12 consecutive weeks. You then take a 4-week break. It takes 4 weeks for collagen to rebuild itself.

The face is broken up into 4 zones – forehead, right cheek, left cheek, and chin. Each zone is treated separately, the Tria laser is glided over the skin in each treatment zone. On the training level, you treat each zone for 30 seconds, on level one each zone is treated for 1 minute, and on level 2 each zone is treated for 2.5 minutes.

The device will beep when a zone is finished and it automatically shuts off after you have finished all of the zones.

How Does it Feel? What are the Possible Side Effects?

Using the laser can be painful, it feels like tiny pinpricks. You may experience a slight warming or prickling, it feels kind of like a sunburn. This is normal.

After using the Tria Age-Defying Laser your skin may look like you have a sunburn. By using it at night, you should be back to normal by morning. Some people experience skin dryness, but a good serum and moisturizer will help with this problem.

A daily SPF should be worn while using this device to protect your new skin from sun damage.

There have been a small number of people who have had dark spots appear when using this device. These people are advised to stop using the device.

Safety Features

  • The age-defying laser does not fire unless it is direct contact with the skin.
  • A lock button prevents the device from powering on.
  • Automatic shut-off after treatment.

Fine Lines and Sun Spots

This machine has been clinically tested for use on periorbital lines (crow’s feet). Tria does state that people have experienced “enhanced skin clarity, smoothness, and radiance”.Β  They also state that the age-defying laser “treats multiple signs of aging”.

Out of the reviews I have read, many people have not seen results on their sunspots. Most see a tightening effect and a plumping of the skin. Tria says that their product can brighten the skin, so in theory, it could help with sunspots, but remember, it has only been clinically-tested for use on periorbital lines (crow’s feet).

Battery Issues

Many of the complaints people have with the age-defying laser are with battery problems. Some have had their device stop working a week into treatment because the battery will not charge anymore. Tria has recently identified the problem and fixed this issue with their new lilac-colored model. Tria will gladly replace the charger if you find you are having issues.

Tria states that the battery will function for 3 years with regular use.

Who Should Not Use The Age-Defying Laser?

tria age-defying laser review

  • people under the age of 18
  • pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • permanent makeup or tattooed skin
  • infected, burned or cut skin

Money-back Guarantee

Tria offers a 90-day money-back guarantee when you purchase from their website. You also receive free shipping and a one-year warranty. Tria often sells bundled packages with their ant-aging serums and cleansers.

Cost

The cost of the Tria Age-Defying Laser is $500. The cost of a dermatologist performed laser treatment is a minimum of $600. So you are saving money. This laser will give you 3 years worth of regular treatments. You will get about 3 rounds of treatments per year, so in 3 years you will have had 9 rounds of treatments.

My Final Conclusion

Is the Tria worth its expensive price-tag? As I said before we got into the review, I don’t think you should expect this machine to take 10 years off your face. This is not a fountain of youth. It is, however, a proven technology that will stimulate collagen production in your skin. You WILL see results with consistent and proper use. This laser is best suited for use on fine lines.

If you have deep wrinkles or scarring, this product will not help. To help with those issues, you will need professional treatments.

I think that this is a good buy for someone who is starting to notice fine lines on their face and wants to hold them off. For this device to satisfy you, you need to be someone who can stick with a routine, and be consistent in your usage of the product. You also need to be realistic in your expectations. You will notice tightening and plumping of the skin, and your fine lines will be reduced, but do not expect an overnight, miraculous transformation.

Most of the reviews I have read have been great, many people love their Tria laser. There have been some disappointments with battery life and with results, but for the most part, this seems to be a good product. Tria has worked at remedying its battery issue and the technology has been proven to work.

All in all, I think that this product is worth the money it costs.

Tria Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser Review

tria beauty eye wrinkle correcting laser review

Basic Product Info

A small, lightweight, easy-to-use, hand-held device that emits a laser for treating wrinkles around the eyes. The Tria Age-Defying Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser is 3.2 inches high and weighs 1.2 pounds. It is quite small and fits nicely in the palm of your hand.Β  This device is charged with a standard mini USB.

The Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser is specially designed for treating wrinkles around the eyes and uses the same technology as a dermatologist laser treatment. This at-home, non-ablative fractional laser works quickly on the sensitive skin around your eyes to treat wrinkles and fine lines.

The biggest drawing feature of this product is the convenience of performing skin treatments in the comfort of your own home. Tria states that you should be able to see results in as little as 2 weeks, though the most visible results will be after the full 8 weeks of treatment.

Laser Intensity and Treatment Protocol

This laser has only 1 intensity level.

Treatment is just 2 minutes (1 minute per eye) a day for 7 days a week over the course of 8 weeks. You then take at least a 4-week break to allow cell renewal. You can then begin another treatment if you desire.

How Does it Feel? What are the Possible Side Effects?

You may feel a warming, stinging, itching, or pin-pricking sensation. Your skin may be reddened after use. By using the device at night, you will be sleeping through the redness and waking up with a normal-looking face. You may experience dry skin or flaking and you need to use a sunblock to protect your newly forming skin.

Applying a nourishing eye cream after treatment will help minimize dryness, redness, and irritation. This device is not for the eyelids, only the parts of the eyes where you can feel bone underneath.

Safety Features

  • Must be in contact with the skin to work.
  • The laser shuts off automatically after treatment.

Does it Work?

Laser technology has been proven to work. The Tria Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser sends beams of light deep into the skin’s layers to cause microscopic wounds and therefore stimulate collagen production. It is the same technology that you would receive by a professional dermatologist, only it is a much weaker laser. This allows for safe at-home use.

Difference between the Tria Age-Defying Laser and the Tria Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser

The Tria Age-Defying Laser is larger and meant for treating the whole face, whereas the Tria Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser is for use only around the eyes.

The interesting thing to me, is that the larger Tria laser is only proven to work on wrinkles around the eyes, so this leaves me asking the question, why not just buy the cheaper Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser instead? If the Tria Age-Defying Laser is only proven to work on crows feet, why bother trying to use it on other parts of the face?

I guess the reasoning is that the Tria Age-Defying Laser should work on other wrinkles in theory and it should help with overall skin texture.

Who Should Not Use The Age-Defying Laser?

  • those under the age of 18
  • pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • tattooed skin
  • skin with permanent makeup
  • damaged or wounded skin
  • people with dark skin may be more prone to skin discoloration

Money-back Guarantee

The Tria Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser comes with a 1-year warranty. If you buy from Triabeauty.com you get a 90-day money-back guarantee and free shipping.

This device is meant to last for 3 years or more.

Cost

The Tria Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser has a price of $249. In-office laser treatments will cost you much more (minimum $600 per visit). With this at-home laser, you should be able to get 4 courses of treatments a year for 3 years, for a total of 12 rounds of treatment.

My Final Conclusion

This is a more affordable laser than the bigger Tria Age-Defying Laser and it is convenient and easy to use. Only 2 minutes a day is needed to see results. The most important thing to realize is that you have to be consistent. If you have a hard time sticking to a routine, this device may not be for you.

You will see results, the technology is proven to work, but you must be consistent, you must do the treatment every night. This device is so convenient because you can use it at home. It also costs way less than professional treatments.

I think that this device may be a better buy than the larger Tria laser. This one is cheaper and has a faster treatment time, though it only does the eyes and not the entire face.

There are many positive reviews on this laser, with many people seeing results.  There have also been negative reviews, where people have seen their skin getting worse, or they don’t like the sensation that the laser produces. For the most part, people love their Tria Laser.

This product does not seem to have the same charging issues as Tria’s Age-Defying Laser, so no need to worry about that problem. This device is small and would be easy to travel with.

All-in-all, I think the Tria Age-Defying Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser is worth its price tag.

Conclusion:

Would I buy these products?

I am intrigued, that is for sure. I am still young enough, that I don’t have a lot of wrinkles, so at this point, it seems unnecessary, but once I am in my 40’s, I may feel differently. I do have some acne scars I would like to get rid of, so it may be an investment I want to make in that area.

Wow these products are so pricey. But if it is for your health, it is never expensive. And going to a professional is much more expensive. Your site is very informational. Have you tried changing the background color to a different one? For me it looks plain. But overall its really good. Keep it up!

Laser treatment has been used by many because it gives them a positive result in taking care of their skin especially to those who are already aging. Personally, I am amaze with the benefits of using it because I had some friends who are enjoying the advantage of it already. Thanks to this review because it can really help people decide whether to use it or not including me.

    Hi Maria & Andrea:

Pleasure to meet you both. Thank you for your website on organic skin care treatment. I learned much from this website and your review on Tria Beauty Laser. I have never heard of laser treatment for skin. Plus I am not familiar withe the terms Ablative and Non-Albative and I am still unsure what the real differences are. You mentioned the side effects like Non-Albative leaving the feeling like multiple pin pricks which sounds unpleasant to me, but the Albative although is more effective, side effects side effects can include itching, swelling, redness and hyper-pigmentation which also sounds unpleasant.

Can you provide more information to help clarify the benefits and advantages of undergoing this kind of treatment for our skin?

Laser treatment sends beams of light into your skin to cause microscopic damage which they stimulates collagen rebuilding. Collagen is what is responsible for the firmness and texture of your skin. As we age, our skin produces less collagen, so our skin starts to sag. Laser therapy stimulates new collagen production and thus reduces fine lines.

Ablative and non-ablative are 2 different types of laser treatment. Ablative is a more severe laser treatment, it removes the top layer of skin. It causes redness on your face and your skin will look terrible for days to weeks afterwards. It works really well for deep scarring and you only need a few treatments to see results.

Non-ablative is a more gentle approach. It only effect the under layers of the skin (leaving the surface intact). It takes longer to see results, but you don’t have to deal with having a red face for weeks after treatment. Tria uses the non-ablative technology. This way you can perform the treatment at home. It takes a couple weeks to see results, but it does work at diminishing wrinkles.

Hope that clarifies it for you πŸ™‚

Thanks for the really informative article, Andrea! I’ve been considering buying a Tria laser, but I haven’t decided on which model to go with. I don’t see why the smaller one couldn’t be used on other parts of the face. Do you?

The smaller one could probably be used on the whole face, but it would take so much longer to cover all of it. The laser opening is much smaller on the eye-wrinkle laser (it is just a small hole), whereas the Tria facial laser has a larger, rectangular laser. If you used the smaller laser, I think you would have a hard time covering all of the areas of your face.

I hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions πŸ™‚

Although I don’t have the Tria laser to renew the skin, I do have the Tria Laser hair removal and it does work. So my guess is that if the hair removal one work then the other one should too. They are expensive, but it’s worth the money. I have man for six years now and it’s still working just fine.

Thanks for your question Madelin, I am not sure about the answer. I looked into it and there is nothing I can find that says explicitly that you should not use the Tria on acne, it only says not to use it on infected, damaged, cut, or broken skin. I would make the assumption that acne is considered infected skin. The main problem you would have with using it on infected skin is increased irritation and discomfort.

Great review! I now know everything I need to know about laser skin treatment. I was always worried that it may not be safe for black skin, but it seems the only one I need to avoid is the Tria Beauty Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser. They are a little pricey but the benefit sound incredible, I guess once you get to your 30s like me, its worth investing in things like this.

For anyone thinking about doing something about their facial wrinkles, this is an honest review with the pros and cons of using a home laser machine to treat yourself. Andrea makes it clear that although it takes about the same length of time to see results, this is a DIY and you have to commit to following the protocol. But don’t let that scare you. LOL. It takes about a minute a day, 5 days a week for 12 weeks! And this tool costs less than one appointment to have a dermatologist do it.

Thanks for sharing this great info, Andrea! I had no idea this is something I can do myself at such great savings! Like you, I’m not quite wrinkly enough to bother but those days are approaching and I’ll check in with you before I do anything. Thanks for all the great info.

I’ve never used a device like this because they all seem to get bad reviews. I think in a few years somebody might actually bring to market one that works. What I really like about this is that it’s non-invasive and seems safe. I’ll keep watching for it. I like your site a lot!

    Thanks, Andrea. Great review.
I used the Trip Beauty for 12 weeks and loved the results. I had Sculptra (injections) at a dermatologist office 2 years ago and felt my face was too round, like it was not me.
Well, a month after I finished my treatment I had to get a new driver’s license and there is a big difference from my 2 year old license. I look much younger on the recent one.
What I was wondering, after the 12 weeks have passed, how long do you have to wait to do it all over again? Any idea?

Like you, I am a little young at the moment to need it but I’m not that far off my 40s so its certainly something I will be considering in the future. How great that it only takes 2 minutes a day as well – that’s definitely worth investing in!

I used the Tria eye laser and it ruined my face. I should have listened to the negative reviews. I have fat loss around my eyes and got texture damage similar to fraxel damage (orange peel skin ). I am so depressed about this and can only be thankful that I stopped using it after 2.5 weeks as I noticed my skin getting worse. It is now 1 month out and it keeps getting worse. Please, I don’t want more people to suffer like I am so I want to get the word out. If anyone reading this knows how to fix damage cause by Tria, pls let me know!

      Hi Bobbie,
I’m sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Tria. I myself noticed that the place my skin got really red during the treatment – my cheek – got sunken. I thought I’m imagining it, but now I’m really worried. I only did one full week, but indeed my skin doesn’t look good (redness in some parts of my face is still visible after couple of days off), a few broken capillaries popped up … :/

Can you tell me if the fat loss got better with time? How is your skin now?

    Great Review!

I have tria and have used it faithfully for about three months. I am 75 and have very good skin with constant comments. I just felt I wanted to start some skincare and decided to try Tria.

Now I, too, am concerned about fat loss in the skin of my face. I am already thin an really need all the fat under the dermis that I can get, I may stop using the tria due this concern. Too bad it was so expensive as I hate to waste the money. Better safe than sorry.Madea

Hi Maraianne, I would say to stop using the tria and see if it makes a difference to the fat loss πŸ™‚
