Your skin absorbs what you put on it. You wouldn’t knowingly eat toxins so why would you put them on your skin?
Sometimes it’s hard to know what products to purchase. We read ingredients labels and we see the word “natural” but not all natural products are created equal. Unfortunately the terms “natural” and “organic” are thrown around with little oversight on what they are allowed to contain. Many natural and organic products still contain questionable ingredients.
This guide is meant to help you sift through all the information and make an informed decision when it comes to finding truly natural and organic products. Here are the steps to take when seeing if a product is truly living up to your ethics.
Read The Label
Just because it says it is organic or natural doesn’t mean it is free of toxins. Look for certification labels and inspect the ingredients list.
Look at the Ingredients. Avoid these synthetics:
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
- Diethanolamine (DEA)
- Monoethanolamine (MEA)
- Triethanolamine (TEA)
- Propylene Glycol (PEG)
- Parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Propyl, Ethyl)
- Isopropyl (SD-40)
- Mineral Oil
- Triclosan
- DMDM Hydantoin & Urea
- FD&C Color Pigments
- Synthetic Fragrances
Fragrances
These can hide all sorts of terrible chemicals that are not disclosed on the label. Look for products that use essential oils for their smell instead.
Reputation
Look into what other people are saying, is the company loved by their costumers? Do your research and see what kind of reviews the brands and products are getting. What are the brands ethics? Do they deliver on what they promise? Do they give back to the community and strive to provide the healthiest products?
Popularity
Organic Beauty Blogs can help you find popular products and read about their effectiveness. Find the best-sellers when looking to try new products; they are best-sellers for a reason: because they work.
Packaging
Dark glass packaging is the best, it keeps the product from degrading and is recyclable.
Certifications
Look for logos and certification labels. Some labels you may want to look for are:
- Gluten-free
- Vegan
- Cruelty-free
- Certified Organic
It can be quite the task to do all the research and reading needed to truly know if a product is safe, but it is well worth it. If you need some help finding awesome products, check out our reviews and our buying guides, you won’t be disappointed.
All the Best,
