Dermatitis is a skin condition which becomes red, swollen, and sore, sometimes with small blisters. Dermatitis usually results from direct irritation of the skin by an external agent or an allergic reaction.

Simply, dermatitis is inflammation of the skin. Many skin conditions will fall under the name Dermatitis; this includes dry, itchy skin or thickening skin caused by scratching an area too long. Most rashes including eczema can also be considered dermatitis.

Dermatitis can be identified by these skin conditions:

  • Crusting
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Inflammation
  • Blistering
  •  Allergic dermatitis: This is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction involving allergens and antibodies.
  • Irritant dermatitis: Exposure to irritating chemicals or detergents.

Understanding what is causing your dermatitis is the best way to choose the proper treatment. However, there are measures that can be taken to improve symptoms even if the exact dermatitis type is not known.

You can treat the symptoms by calming and soothing irritated skin with our simple DIY recipe, using natural and very effective ingredients.

Oatmeal for Dermatitis

Oatmeal is one of the most affordable skin care treatments available. It has been used for centuries for its powerful benefits in treating irritating skin conditions.

In fact, The New Zealand Dermatological Society has provided an article on How Oatmeal Helps Skin Conditions.

Here is a summary of how Oatmeal benefits the skin:

  • Oatmeal binds to the skin and provides a protective barrier against irritants.
  • Oatmeal contains water-binding polysaccharides (long chain sugars) and hydrocolloids that hold moisture against the skin allowing it to act as an emollient.
  • Oatmeal acts as a buffering agent that can help maintain the skin’s normal pH.
  • Oatmeal has active antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help with dry and itchy skin.
  • The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties also help with current sun damage as well as further photo-aging.
  • Oatmeal is excellent as a cleanser and holds moisture deep in the tissues of the skin.

DIY Recipe for Soothing Dermatitis

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup rolled oats (our top pick)
  • 1 TBSP lavender flowers (certified organic lavender flowers)
  • 1 TBSP baking soda (aluminum free baking soda)
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil (best, pure lavender oil)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in blender or coffee grinder and blend for 30 seconds. You will have a lovely, blended powder.

Transfer your powder into a glass jar to store.

To Use:

Combine 2 teaspoons of the scrub with 1 ½ tsp water. Scrub your mixture into the skin with circular motions for about 2 minutes. Rinse, and apply your favorite toner.

You can substitute water with milk, yogurt, aloe or honey. I also like to use herbal tea infused water to add different minerals. Have fun with it. This scrub is so simple and effective!

Lavender for Dermatitis

This recipe uses both Lavender essential oil and whole dried lavender flower. The whole dried flower will help create an exfoliating effect on the skin, while to oil will provide deep soothing benefits.

Lavender oil helps treat dermatitis wonderfully. Lavender benefits the skin by helping to speed healing, reducing scars and disinfecting wounds. It can help with acne, by killing bacteria and reducing inflammation. It is a powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory soothing very irritated, red and itchy skin.

Baking Soda for Dermatitis

Baking soda is great for the skin in many ways. We added it to this recipe because it is wonderful at removing dry, flaky skin. It will unclog the pores and is very gentle on irritated skin.

Baking soda is often applied to insect bites or rashes to relieve irritation and itching. It is very soothing and exfoliating to the skin.

Conclusion

Dermatitis can be relieved very quickly with this soothing recipe. Oatmeal is a powerful, natural ingredient that benefits the irritating symptoms dermatitis can bring.

This is a simple, effective recipe that can help get you back to feeling better about your skin. Be sure to purchase the best quality ingredients for your recipe. Ingredients that have additives or artificial fragrances can further irritate your dermatitis.
