If there’s an industry that is continually growing and introducing new products, it’s the beauty industry. Cosmetics brands are always using the appeal of natural ingredients to create products that offer the best results without interfering with the body in any way. One of the products that have blown up recently is CBD, the hemp extract that doesn’t cause a high.

Vegan products are always preferred over synthetic chemicals in the treatment of skin and hair. CBD is an organic compound that has since been legalized by the federal government for medicinal and recreational use. Ever since the 2018 Farm Bill was passed, more companies have invested in skincare products that use cannabidiol as the main active ingredient. But why?

Why should I use CBD beauty products?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a naturally-occurring chemical compound that is found in hemp. CBD can be extracted from the stalks, leaves, buds, and seeds of hemp plants, and it contains a myriad of health benefits, including the unique ability to enhance skin complexion and prevent pimples. Here are a few other ways that CBD can improve your beauty routine:

CBD naturally elevates your endocannabinoids

If you’re wondering how exactly CBD benefits us, the experts say it has a lot to do with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is a complex network of brain receptors and hormones found in any mammal and are responsible for everything from energy levels, the immune system, mood, pain, sleep, and other essential functions. The ECS is responsible for maintaining homeostasis, and that makes it an excellent area to target when treating a variety of conditions.

CBD has been described as a lock-and-key that targets the ECS and gets it to “unlock” specific cannabinoids (which work with particular transmitters) to deliver all sorts of effects from relaxation, to an enhanced complexion. Since the body also produces its own cannabinoids, introducing CBD into the body doesn’t cause unpleasant side effects. Instead, it enables the body to generate desired results using its own endocannabinoid system.

Using CBD in your beauty routine

There are many reasons to incorporate CBD into your beauty routine. These are some of the many reasons cannabidiol assists in maintaining health and perfect skin.

  • Aches and pains – tinctures can be used to prevent stymie pain, but CBD oil can also be applied directly to tight muscles and in the pelvic region to ease menstrual cramps. Now, this may not be directly linked to skincare, but the advantage is that CBD will target multiple ailments.
  • Enhanced moisturizing – hemp oil contains as much as 80% essential fats, and it also has the perfect ratio of omega 3s and omega 6 fatty acids. Because it contains the same lipids in the skin, CBD can penetrate deep into the skin and prevent aging by providing moisture and fatty acids.
  • CBD prevents abrasions and acne through its action on the immune system, sebaceous glands, and also by supplying moisture, which can help prevent abrasions and improve healing.
  • Contains Vitamin D – CBD is the only vegetable oil that contains Vitamin D, and that makes it particularly crucial for skincare and the absorption of calcium. It also has Vitamin E and B complex, which provide high nutritional value to the skin.
  • Full-spectrum CBD enhances beauty and health. In case you’re wondering, full-spectrum basically means taking the entire group of cannabinoids found in hemp. The scientific argument is that all the cannabinoids perfect important roles in maintaining homeostasis, and might be more efficient than taking CBD alone.
  • Use CBD balm to soothe the skin. This is a topical preparation that is infused with high-quality hemp oil and may also contain shea butter, coconut oil, natural scents, etc. It provides lasting moisture and naturally protects the skin from UV exposure, dryness, itchiness, whiteheads, blackheads, and acne, among others.

How is CBD extracted?

So a lot of people know that CBD comes from the hemp plant, but few are familiar with the extraction process that creates CBD oil. There are several ways to extract cannabidiol; however, the most common methods use steam distillation, carbon dioxide, or natural solvents. Here’s a quick look at each of these methods:

  • Steam distillation: uses steam and water to separate cannabidiol from the hemp plant, and the setup usually involves a glass flask, a condenser, an inlet, and an outlet. Water is heated up and then transferred into a flask, which then separates the oil vapor that contains cannabidiol.
  • Solvent extraction: This follows a process that’s similar to steam distillation except for the fact that it uses solvents instead of water to separate cannabidiol from raw plant material.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction: A CO2 extraction makes use of supercritical carbon dioxide to separate the compounds in hemp.
