If winter and cold weather are your worst nightmare regarding the quality of your skin, nature has the right medicine for you. But what about those who have chapped skin no matter the season? Here you can find your solution too.

Essential oils have been used for hundreds of years for aromatherapy, relaxation of the entire body, healing of wounds, and assisting the skin – generally targeting the same areas and problems as today. This is why I suggest turning to essential oils for chapped skin.

While there are hundreds of different oils produced by seeds and plants, they all have their area of healing so to say. This means that you have to know what to get to improve whatever you have problems with.

Below you will find a list of ten essential oils that will effectively fight chapped skin, lock in moisture and protect your skin in any season, at any time. But first, we will talk about the importance of sourcing your essential oils from a quality company.

Where to Source Your Essential Oils

You want high-quality oils for use in skin care. So many essential oil companies dilute their oils or don’t extract them properly to retain freshness.

I do not want you getting ripped off, I want you to have high-quality oils so you can receive high-quality results. That is why I spent years looking for the best essential oil company, and I am happy to share with you the results of that search.

Rocky Mountain Oils is my top essential oil brand choice.

You can head over to my article, “What is the Best Essential Oil Brand?” to learn more.

Essential Oils for Chapped Skin

Carrot Seed Essential Oil (Daucus carota)

This is a very versatile essential oil. However, its best use is found in moisturizing and balancing out the hydration of the skin. Carrot seed essential oil has plenty of beta-carotene in it making it the perfect compound for natural sun damage repair.

Besides dealing with your dry skin issues, carrot seed oil will also protect you against oxidative stress and cell damage when applied topically. This means that you can slow down aging by using it and it will bring back the elasticity of your skin too.

Cedarwood Essential Oil (Juniperus virginiana)

Rich in hue and possessing a warm, woody scent, cedarwood essential oil provides the ultimate solution to chapped skin. It is often used as aromatherapy and relaxation oil for massages, but likewise, cedarwood essential oil is excellent to use on cuts and scrapes or even to repel mosquitoes.

With its powerful properties, it can also be used as a treatment for eczema, dry scalp and in the process of applying it onto your face, besides protecting it from dry, cold, air, it will heal your acne with its strong antiseptic properties too.

Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender essential oil‘s benefits are numerous, and it’s been used both cosmetically and therapeutically for centuries. It has powerful antioxidant, antimicrobial, sedative, calming and anti-depressive properties. Apart from these, you can safely use lavender essential oil if you’re facing chapped skin.

Just rub the diluted oil on the chapped or sunburnt area and wait for it to absorb. If applied daily, you will have long-term improvement within a week.

Frankincense Essential Oil (Boswellia spp.)

This luxurious essential oil has always been used in the Arab world for its healing, cleansing, and aroma-therapeutic properties. With its anti-aging and antibacterial properties, frankincense essential oil promotes healthy skin from every aspect.

It is an astringent meaning it will reduce the size of your pores and loose skin, it treats acne and fades away acne scars, all while dealing with your chapped skin, making it nourished and hydrated once again.

German Chamomile Essential Oil (Matricaria recutita)

Both German and Roman strands of chamomile have their own abundance of benefits. However, the German one is particularly beneficial when it comes to calming dry, chapped skin.

German chamomile essential oil is powerful in calming and soothing painfully inflamed skin. One of its significant benefits except healing chapped skin is in treating harsh skin conditions such as acne, dermatitis, and eczema.

Thanks to several inflammatory elements naturally found in the oil – bisabolol and chamazulene – a small drop of chamomile on boils, sunburns, bee and wasp stings, bruises and small cuts can aid in curing these problems.

Palmarosa Essential Oil (Cymbopogon martini var. motia)

Chapped, flakey, and itchy skin over time, if left untreated, can become rough and painful. While creams can do wonders for your skin initially, they don’t always have the long-lasting effects of essential oils when used regularly and persistently.

One of those is the Palmarosa essential oil also known as Indian or Turkish geranium, rosha or motia, and is a type of tropical grass with versatile uses. Besides the chapped skin issue, palmarosa essential oil treats acne, eczema, and psoriasis, as well as boils, and abscesses.

Patchouli Essential Oil (Pogostemon cablin)

Creams that are advertised for “very dry skin” often have large amounts of wax-based ingredients that can clog pores, leading to acne and can give your face a dull appearance. This is where essential oils come to rescue. Especially astringent ones like patchouli essential oil.

Patchouli oil was traditionally used in Asian folk medicine to treat hair problems like dandruff and oily scalp, as well as skin irritations like chapped skin, general dryness, acne, and eczema.

Myrrh Essential Oil (Commiphora myrrha)

Myrrh essential oil can help maintain healthy skin. It can help soothe chapped or cracked skin, and it is commonly added to skin care products to help with moisturizing and also for fragrance. Ancient Egyptians used it to prevent aging and maintain healthy skin.

Yarrow Essential Oil (Achillea millefolium)

Yarrow is hands down one of the most commonly used essential oil. Its benefits can be attributed to its properties as an anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, cicatrizant, diaphoretic, digestive, expectorant, hemostatic, hypotensive, stomachic and tonic substance. Pretty versatile ha? No wonder it also heals chapped skin effortlessly.

Rocky Mountain Oils doesn’t carry yarrow essential oil, but Plant Therapy (second favorite brand) makes an amazing blue yarrow essential oil.

Helichrysum Essential Oil (Helichrysum italicum)

Helichrysum essential oil can help hydrate chapped or burnt skin and relieve the pain that is associated with sunburns. It can also decrease signs of aging on the skin and block UV-light damage that can contribute to the formation of skin cancer.

Its strong antibiotic and antimicrobial properties make it an excellent treatment for acne because it works without drying the skin or causing redness and other unwanted side effects like the ones by harsh chemical acne treatments or medications.
