A bruise occurs when blood from damaged blood cells deep beneath the skin collect near the surface of the skin resulting in a black or blue mark. They often happen when you bump into something hard enough to cause injury.
Essential oils can help reduce bruising and speed healing by reducing pain, constricting blood flow and increasing blood flow.
The best essential oils for bruising are, Cypress, Lavender and Helichysum. Below I will share with you the steps for treating a bruise at home using essential oils.
Where to Source Essential Oils
You want to purchase high-quality essential oils so you can be sure you are getting your money's worth and aren't getting ripped off with fake or diluted essential oils.
I have been using essential oils for years, and have sampled various brands. On my hunt for the best essential oil brand, I came across Rocky Mountain Oils, and I have been hooked since!
Rocky Mountian Oils has remarkable customer service, exceptional quality, easy-to-navigate packaging, and a user-friendly website.
Step 1 - Constrict Blood Vessels
Cypress and Lavender essential oils can be used right away to constrict blood vessels and calm pain. Create a mixture of 4 - 8 drops of essential oil to 1/2 teaspoon carrier oil and apply some to the injured spot.
Apply a cold pack as quickly as possible to reduce the amount of bruising. The cold reduces blood circulation and limits bleeding into the skin, it will also reduce pain and swelling and speed healing. Protect your skin by putting a wash cloth or towel between the ice pack and your skin.
It is recommended that you apply the ice pack for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. You can repeat this treatment of applying the essential oil blend and applying an ice pack for the next 24 hours.
- Mix 4 - 8 drops of Lavender or Cypress essential oil with 1/2 teaspoon carrier oil and apply to the injured area.
- Apply an ice pack to area with a towel between the ice pack and skin.
- Leave on for 15 minutes.
Step 2 - Increase Blood Circulation
6 - 24 hours after swelling has stopped (48 hours after initial trauma), treatments that constrict blood vessels should be replaced with a treatment to increase blood circulation to heal and reduce the bruise.
This is where Helichysum essential oil should be used. Mix 4- 8 drops in 1/2 teaspoon of carrier oil and apply to the bruised area. Apply gentle heat with a warm washcloth for 10 minutes. Do this 3 - 4 times a day. This will increase blood circulation to the area and facilitate healing.
- Mix 4 - 8 drops of Helichrysum essential oil with 1/2 teaspoon carrier oil and apply to bruise.
- Apply a warm washcloth to the bruise for 10 mintues.
- Repeat 3 - 4 times a day.
Note: There are 2 Types of Helichrysum
Helichrysum gymnocephalum and Helichrysum italicum. The one you want to use for bruising is Helichrysum gymnocephalum. It has strong pain relieving properties and helps blood flow more easily. It can help heal bruises and other wounds associated with injuries.
- gymnocephalum is good for pain, bruising, and inflammation. Not as good for open wounds.
- italicum does the same as above as well as wound healing and nerve regeneration. It is one of the best essential oils for major injuries and quicker healing.
Caution: Due to its high 1,8 cineole constituent, Helicchrysum gymnocephalum should not be used on children younger than 3. Use the Helichrysum italicum instead.

Tea tree essential oils is also very effective on bruise. It’s great for reducing inflammation and speeding up the healing process. To use just drop a 1-3 drops of your preferred oil and lightly massage it into the bruise.
