Buying makeup brushes can be a daunting task. This Essential Makeup Brush Guide is here to help you find some great brushes and learn how to care for them so they will last you a long time! (Did you know a well taken care of brush can last for 10-15 years?)
The application of makeup with the use of brushes has been around forever! This is for a good reason, you can actually achieve a better look with the use of brushes.
An artist has a variety of brushes to create a particular technique, the same as for makeup application. Each brush is designed with a function in mind.
Why Use Makeup Brushes?
Makeup brushes are an amazing tool to create a certain look. Any makeup artist will tell you that they can’t create the look they want without them. They are essential.
Our hands and fingers can not be used the same for makeup application, they drag the skin and can’t fit into the nooks and corners of the eyes.
A List of the Best Brushes
Below you will find makeup brushes sorted into their different uses.
Using a foundation brush helps improve coverage and a flawless look.
The bristles are tightly packed with a tapered end that will hold your product and contour to your eyes for complete coverage.
TIP: To help create a flawless application, take your foundation brush, and run it under warm water. Squeeze the excess water out and then add your foundation to the brush. This helps apply your foundation very smoothly, leaving your complexion even.
A concealer brush is used to help cover blemishes. It is a small contoured brush. Apply to dark circles under your eyes, or spider veins that appear under your eyes and on your cheeks.
These brushes give you nice even coverage to more specific areas you would like to cover.

Cleaning Your Brushes
This will make them last a long time, and prevent any buildup of product and bacteria. Keeping your brushes clean will also help keep your skin clear.
You will want to clean your foundation, lip, eye brushes, and concealer brushes after each use. Your powder and bronze brushes can be cleaned weekly.
How You Clean Your Brushes
- Coat them in Olive Oil. Pour olive oil into a bowl, dip the brush into the oil and swish it around. Once the brush is full of oil, squeeze the oil out of the brush and into the sink.
- Rinse Them. Begin by running your brushes under lukewarm water, rinsing out all of the residual makeup. Try to focus on the actual bristles while avoiding the part of the brush where handle meets the head, as this can loosen the glue over time
- Use a Gentle Soap. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and a squirt of shampoo, and gently swirl your brush tip in the water. If you need to, you can also swirl the brush in the palm of your hand to work up a lather.
- Rinse Again. Rinse the brush tip under running water once again.
- Repeat steps two and three until the water runs clear from the brush
- Wipe Your Brush. Use a cloth to wipe your brush clean, reshaping the bristles as you go.
- Lay Flat to Dry. Lay your brushes flat on a cloth to dry.
- They will be ready and waiting for you the next time!
