Choosing the right essential oils for problem skin takes some know how.

In this guide, I am going to share with you essential oil recipes to help with a few problem skin concerns. These include:

  • broken capillaries
  • rosacea
  • blackheads

About Essential oils

Essential oils are extremely potent, cold pressed oils from plants and natural sources. (Root, bark, petals ect.)

We know from centuries of use and modern research, these oils provide amazing health benefits.

DIY essential oils for skin

There are over 300 essential oils in general use today. Each oil having its own special medicinal benefit, including stimulating cell renewal and fighting bacteria.

Things to remember

  • Always buy therapeutic, pure essential oils. Learn about our favorite brand.
  • Always dilute you oils.
  • Store your oils away form the sun.
  • Love and care for your oils. A lot goes into making them πŸ™‚

Notes on Directions and Use

All essential oils featured in this guide are to be used topically. I will recommend the best quality essential oils to use for each recipe. I will then explain the directions for mixing and how to use the recipe.

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils dilute essential oils so that they can be safely used on your skin.

I recommend the same carrier oil for each recipe. My favorite carrier oil is pure, cold-pressed, organic sweet almond oil because it is excellent for all skin types, is affordable, and readily available.

Benefits of sweet almond oil:

  • Can easily penetrate deep into the skin, softening and dislodging dirt and debris accumulated in the skin pores and hair follicles.
  • Rich in Vitamin E.
  • Vitamin A reduces acne flare-ups.
  • Can be used for all skin types including very sensitive. (It is Hypoallergenic)

Storage of Your Blends

Each blend should be stored in a dark glass bottle. A dark bottle is going to protect your contents from UV rays that will breakdown the potency of your oils.

Remember to Shake and Leave

Shake your blend after it is mixed and leave for 24 hours. Once your blend has settled, strain the contents through a coffee filter, to remove any foreign particles or residue that comes to the surface after you have made a mixture. Now you have a pure face oil!

Where to Source Essential Oils

You want to purchase high-quality essential oils so you can be sure you are getting your money’s worth and aren’t getting ripped off with fake or diluted essential oils.

I have been using essential oils for years, and have sampled various brands. On my hunt for the best essential oil brand, I came across Rocky Mountain Oils, and I have been hooked since!

Rocky Mountian Oils has remarkable customer service, exceptional quality, easy-to-navigate packaging, and a user-friendly website.

Learn why I think they are the best essential oil brand.

Broken Capillaries

The finest branches of the blood vessel system that serve the face can sometimes become broken. These broken capillaries tend to affect those with delicate, fragile skin.

Broken capillaries are caused mainly from stimulants. Coffee, alcohol, sun, and wind.

Broken Capillaries Facial Oil Recipe

Ingredients

Carrier oil:

  • Sweet almond oil - 2 Tbsp

Essential Oils:

  • Geranium - 10 drops. Improves blood flow. Increases cell turnover, building new skin.
  • Cypress - 5 drops. Strengthens blood capillaries, strengthens connective tissue.
  • Parsley - 15 drops. Improves circulation, while detoxifying the blood and tissues.

Directions

  • Mix your blend of oils together first.
  • Add your essential oil blend to your cold-pressed sweet almond oil, shake and allow the mixture to sit for 24 hours. This gives your mixture time to bind.
  • Strain your contents through a coffee filter into a new glass bottle to remove any residue. Now you have a pure oil blend.

Usage

Apply mixture to a freshly cleansed face. Wash with very warm water, or use a hot face cloth to open the pores. The skin will better absorb your amazing new blend.

Use your blend daily. Store your blend in a dark glass bottle.

essential oils for problems skin - rosacea

Rosacea

Associated with excessive oiliness, rosacea is most prominent in areas like the nose and cheeks. Similar to acne in that the affected area becomes flushed red, along with pustules or lumps that cover the skin. Rosacea is not a quick fix, but continued treatment will greatly improve your skin.

Treatment of rosacea is a two-part process, both lasting 14 days each.

DIY Rosacea Treatment Using Essential Oils

Recipe 1: Do this treatment for 14 days

Carrier oil:

  • Sweet almond oil - 2 tablespoons

Essential oils:

  • German Chamomile - 15 drops. Helps clean the blood, promotes regeneration of the skin.
  • Parsley - 15 drops. Improves circulation, while detoxifying the blood and tissues.

Directions

  • Mix your blend of oils together first.
  • Add your essential oil blend to your cold pressed sweet almond oil, shake and allow the mixture to sit for 24 hours.

Store your blend in a dark glass bottle. You can use your mixture 1-2 times per day.

Recipe 2: Now use the following blend for the next 14 days.

Carrier oil:

  • Sweet almond oil - 2 tablespoons

Essential oils:

  • Cypress -15 drops. Strengthens blood capillaries, strengthens connective tissue.
  • Geranium -15 drops. Improves blood flow. Increases cell turnover, building new skin.

Directions and Usage

Use this blend the same as the blend for your first 14 days.

essential oils for problem skin - blackhead treatment

Blackheads

Blocked sebum becomes a blackhead when the surface cells develop sulfides which, in contact with oxygen, turn the cells black. Blackheads can become infected when removed and the opening just gets filled up again with sebum. This condition is related to the overproduction of the sebaceous glands.

3 Part Treatment for Blackheads

Step 1: Facial Steam

The first thing you will want to do is open your pores, this will help break loose the blackheads. The most effective way to open your pores is by steaming the face.

  • Hold your face above a pot of boiled water with a few drops of Lavender in it.
  • Cover your head with a towel. Steam the face for 10 minutes. Keep eyes closed.
  • Using 2 Q-Tips, Gently remove the blackheads, being very careful not to damage the skin.
  • Rinse your face with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.

Step 2: Apply Facial Tonic

Recipe

  • Mineral water - 2 ounces. Provides the skin with added minerals.
  • Apple cider vinegar - 2 teaspoons. Antibacterial, great for removing excess sebum.
  • Witch hazel - 1 teaspoon. Astringent.
  • Bergamot - 5 drops. Excellent in the treatment of staphylococcus (bacteria causing blackheads)
  • Cypress - 5 drops. Strengthens blood capillaries, strengthens connective tissue.

Directions and Usage

Mix your tonic in a spray bottle. If you steam your face and use your tonic twice a week, you will greatly prevent reoccurring blackheads.

Step 3 : Apply Facial Oil Blend

Recipe:

Carrier oils:

  • Sweet almond oil - 3 tablespoons
  • Jojoba oil - 1 tablespoon. Non-comedogenic oil, great for the connective tissues. Jojoba oil is a liquid wax that can form a long-lasting protective layer over damaged skin.

Essential oils:

  • Lemongrass - 5 drops. Improves circulation.
  • Lavender - 2 drops. Antiseptic, aids in skin irritation.
  • Violet leaf - 5 drops. Soothes and helps heal inflammation.
  • Clary Sage - 2 drops. Antibacterial, improves circulation.
  • Thyme - 2 drops. Helps fight infection.

Directions and use

  • Mix your blend of oils together first.
  • Add your essential oil blend to your carrier oils, shake and allow the mixture to sit for 24 hours. This gives your mixture time to bind.
  • Strain your contents through a coffee filter into a new glass bottle (this one is the right size) to remove any residue. Now you have a pure oil blend.

Massage your new blend into the skin with circular motions.

Your essential oil blend should be used daily after you have washed your face.

Conclusion

Making your own skin care is really easy. You can make high-quality skincare that totally works. Sometimes all you have to do is look at the ingredients of luxury organic skincare, and learn that you can make a very similar blend for half the cost.

Be careful not to compromise on ingredients.

Do not buy fragrance oils. Only buy high-quality essential oils, such as those from Rocky Mountian Oils.

The same goes for your carrier oil. Cold pressed and organic is the only way to go to be sure you get amazing quality.

Some fantastic information here about alternatives to buying expensive organic skin care products and keeping free from all parabens and other nasties found in non-organic products. I’ll be using these tips myself! Thank you, very good website.

Hello Maria! Happy Holidays (in passing!)!! I had been looking for natural treatments for broken capillaries (I have a little red dot on the size of my nose that is clearly a broken blood vessel) and your site was the clearest and most reliable sounding! I immediately followed your links to purchase the essential oils from Amazon.com. The only thing is that I have a lot of good quality argan oil and also rosehip oil and wondered if I could substitute those for the carrier oil (sweet almond). What do you think? It would save me a few dollars and also make use of my plentiful supply of either argan or rosehip oil. Thank you for a great site and very detailed and easy to follow instructions! Looking forward to trying the remedy!

      Hi Marie,
Wonderful to have you join us. Happy holidays to you too!
To answer your question, I would for sure use the oils you have on hand as your carrier. They are both excellent oils, in fact rosehip seed oil has a high content of Vitamin A, and Vitamin A helps repair tissue and blood vessels under the skin. Excellent for broken capillaries. Argan oil is going to help keep moisture and lubricate the skin at a very deep level, brining those essential oils with it. If you want more information on your carrier oils just type argan oil or rosehip oil in our search bar, we have lots of articles to read πŸ™‚
So excited to hear about your progress, keep us posted!
      Maria.

Thank you so much for the advice Maria! I will use a mixture of both carrier oils to get the benefit of both as well as the essential oils. I will keep you posted in a few weeks/months if and when I see some improvement!

I used to suffer with very bad redness, rosacea and broken capillaries and I have tried so many products. I wasn’t holding out much hope for the Somaluxe Redness Repair but it was so reasonably priced and it calmed my redness from the first use. I do believe that with this type of thing you find what works for you by trial and error so all I can say is that after MANY years of searching I have, eventually, found a product that helps and will continue to use it.

Hi Bernice, We have a couple of articles on getting rid of dark spots, you can see them here and here. The best carrier oils for dealing with hyper-pigmentation are rosehip seed, sea buckthorn and tamanu oil. Essential oils that work well are: lemon (do not use during the day as it increases your risk of sunburn) and carrot seed.

Here is a mask recipe you can try. Use it three times a week to reduce uneven skin tone and scarring.

      1/2 teaspoon organic cinnamon
      1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
      1 teaspoon raw honey
      2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

Mix ingredients and apply to a clean face. Leave on for 15 minutes and wash off.

Hi Christine, thanks for your question. A safe alternative for you would be either grapeseed oil or sunflower oil. Let us know if you have any other questions πŸ˜€
