Deodorant-Choosing a Natural Alternative

Easy Change

Natural deodorant was one of the first changes I made when slowly switching over my products to non toxic alternatives. I knew that the drug store deodorants would harm me much faster using a chemical and perfume stick so close to my lymph nodes and breasts. So it was easy to switch as soon as I became aware of new knowledge.

I have tried many different natural deodorants and have found it to be difficult using a regular stick style. I found that most were either too greasy or they didn’t work well. I would say I sweat a little more than average, but this is also improving from making many other changes to my diet. I have found that using a cream or mist deodorant has been far more effective.

Why Switch to a Natural Deodorant?

Considering the ingredients of the drug store deodorants, you will notice that they can be very harsh. Aluminum is often found in most deodorants. It is used to block the sweat glads to prevent sweating. The problem is, you do not want to block sweat glands, and you do not want to absorb any of these chemicals. Even artificial fragrance can be harmful. Certain cancers have been found to be linked to the use of deodorants. Slowly accumulating chemical build up in the lymphatic system and altering the sweat glands function.

For most people, they apply their deodorant right after their shower. This is ok if you are using a natural, non harmful product. Its important to realize that after a shower our pores are more open. Absorbing more product. So when using a product with toxic ingredients like aluminum, you are directly absorbing such harsh chemicals right into a very delicate area.

Try these strategies

We need to sweat, so treating sweat should not involve blocking the sweat glands. It should be neutralizing the bacteria that causes the smell associated with sweating. If you find you sweat a lot you should consider using a cream or mist and wash your under arms once during the day. Yes, this may seem inconvenient, but you simply need to wipe with a little water on a cloth then reapply your product. This will also prevent smelling.

Another strategy I like is to apply my deodorant a little later in the morning. This way I will have likely sweat after my coffee or busy morning, and I will prolong the use of my deodorant. Leaving the house more fresh.

Choosing your deodorant

Deodorant is such an easy product to shop for. All you really need to consider is the ingredients. You want antibacterial properties and long lasting oils. Citrus oils are great for both. If you have sensitive skin you can look for a much more gentle oil that has just the same antibacterial action like lavender.

Moisture control is another thing to consider when choosing a deodorant. Ingredients like clay or baking soda work wonders.
