Burts Bees Buttermilk Lotion
I have used Burts Bees products before, they are available at my local health food store and even at the drugstore. I have liked them for the most part and have never had a bad reaction to them. They boast an all natural claim and mostly fall into that category. They do, however still contain some questionable ingredients. Having been bought up by Clorox in 2007 has made some people not want to support this brand anymore.
They do state on their labels how much of a percent of the product is natural so at least they are trying to be transparent.
This particular product is made for babies and is supposed to be great for sensitive skin.
The ingredients in Burts Bees Buttermilk Lotion are:
Water (Filtered), Sunflower Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Coconut Oil, Stearic Acid (vegetable fat), Beeswax, Orange Wax, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Aloe Barbadensis, Buttermilk Powder, Sodium Borate (natural borax), Xanthan Gum (natural thickener), Sucrose Stearate (sugar emulsifier), Glucose, Glucose Oxidase, Lactoperoxidase (sugar & natural enzymes), Rosemary Extract, Fragrance
On Amazon.com the reviews are very black and white. People either love it or hate it.
These are the reviews for Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Buttermilk Lotion

What do they love about it?
- no alcohol so it doesn’t dry out the skin

- it smells beautiful, like milk and honey
- not a traditional baby scent
- doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy
- doesn’t sting the skin
- absorbs quickly
- helped their child’s eczema
There are 17 1-star reviews. Some people do not like this product.
Most of these negative reviews are from parents whose child broke out in a rash after using this product, some of which had severe reactions to this lotion. The negative reviews also included:
- too strong of a smell
- dislike the smell
It seems that those who like the smell and do not have a skin reaction really enjoy using Burts Bees Buttermilk Lotion. Those that do not like the product have either reacted to it with skin inflammations and rashes or they just don’t like the smell.
I wonder what ingredient is causing so many children to break out in a rash?
My guess from looking at the ingredients is maybe the “fragrance” contains something nasty. More than 100 fragrance ingredients have been identified as allergens [source].
Since being bought by Clorox, it looks like their ingredients have changed. I found this review on amazon:
Didn’t take long for Clorox to change the formula for Aloe & Buttermilk Body Lotion. Disappointed. Switching to Aura Cacia. Coconut oil went from 4th ingrd to 9th. Aloe from 7 to 13, Buttermilk from 9 to 14. Goodguide gives it 4 out of 10 on health. Added decyl cocoate, polyglyceryl-3 stearate, glyceryl stearate citrate, cetyl alcohol, lactic acid, citric acid, sodium stearoyl lactylate, sodium benzoate, magnesium aluminum silicate, phenoxyethanol, limonene.
Sounds like a nasty mix to me. I am not sure if this applies to the baby lotion. It looks like their are 2 different buttermilk lotions. There is a Burts Bees Soothing Sensitive Aloe & Buttermilk Body Lotion and a Burts Bees Baby Bee Buttermilk Lotion. The above review was from the Sensitive Aloe and Buttermilk Body Lotion.
So what can we use on our delicate babies skin that is nourishing and is natural and does not contain irritating ingredients?
I would recommend Lina Hanson’s Global Baby Serum
