Want a non-toxic lip tint? See our picks for the 5 best organic lip tints on the market! Get subtle, hydrating color, without the toxins.
There are a lot of lip products out there, but how lip tints differentiate themselves from, say, lipsticks, lip balms, and lip glosses, is they are typically lighter in pigment but more hydrating in formula.
Basically, you get a lip balm and lipstick all in one!
That’s why we’re a big fan of lip tints. And because they’re becoming more popular, there are increasingly more lip tints brands and shades to choose from. Especially with drier and colder weather making their way over (hello, fall and winter!), we’re getting pretty into lip tints.
Below, we have a list of five of our favorite organic lip tints. These are harmless to apply to the skin, unlike traditional lip products. Their application is smooth and they emulsify easily. With all of them, you can apply as much or as little color as you want, depending on the look you want to go for.
Ingredients to Look for in a Lip Tint
The world of makeup is tainted by the inclusion of certain harmful and toxic ingredients. Because healthy, non-toxic beauty is important to us, we researched what the best ingredients are for lip tints. Below is our list:
- Organic oils: These are almost necessary to have in your lip tints, because they’re so hydrating and nourishing! Specifically, we love avocado and coconut oil, along with pumpkin and pomegranate seed oils.
- Antioxidants: With anti-aging properties, ingredients like green tea and acai seed oils are on our roster of superstar ingredients.
- Fruit pigments: Instead of heavy metals as coloring agents, look for fruit pigments. Unlike their chemical cousins, they offer a 100% safe application.
- Essential oils: The better option when it comes between synthetic fragrance and natural scents. With mood-lifting properties, you can’t go wrong.
Ingredients to Avoid in a Lip Tint
It’s not easy finding an organic and natural lip tint that gets the job done. We know options are limited, but we want to make sure you stay away from toxic ingredients in your makeup products. Below, we’ve created a list of what you should avoid in lip tints:
- Chromium: Linked to stomach tumors, chromium is frequently used as a coloring agent in lip products.
- Aluminum: This heavy metal is another coloring agent, but it’s also a neurotoxin, linked to causing tumors in women.
- Lead: It’s not possible to find safe levels of this in makeup products, as it’s a hormone disruptor and neurotoxin.
- Fragrance: Perhaps scents make your lip products a tad more alluring, but are they really necessary? High levels of fragrance in makeup is linked to hormone disruption and allergies.

Rich in sunflower seed oil and cocoa seed butter, we love the ILIA Tinted Lip Conditioners for their buildability and moisturizing formula. Not too rich and not too sheer, you’ll find that this product sits right in the sweet spot, making it perfect for layering, depending on the look you’re going for.
This lip conditioner is easy to use and apply: In way of a traditional lipstick, all you’ve got to do is glide along the lips. But this one doesn’t contain all the chemicals and manmade ingredients that are in the other guys, so your lips stay nice and unharmed.

For a rich consistency, look no further than the Alima Pure Lip Tints. Lightly scented with peppermint oil, these tints go on smooth as butter and last throughout the day. Formulated to provide deep hydration to your lips, pumpkin, pomegranate, and sunflower seed oils take this lip tint to the next level.
These shades are fairly opaque for lip tints, but if you want a lighter look, we suggest applying just a slight amount and rubbing it on your lips until it fully emulsifies. All in all, we definitely were not let down by how rich in moisture these tints were and the color they provided.
Pros
- Very affordable
- Long-lasting
- Deeply moisturizing
Cons
- None!

With a rather short list of ingredients—including coconut oil, avocado oil, and vitamin E—the Henné Organics Luxury Lip Tints keep your lips moisturized while providing a chic wash of color. The shades appear slightly more pigmented than they appear in real life, so keep in mind that, upon application, the product will be more sheered out on your lips.
Still, we love these lip tints and how truly luxurious they feel. We hope they add more shades to the collection in the near future, but the shades they currently have are show-stoppers. Bonus: With a sturdier formulation, these lip tints stand up to the heat in the car on a very hot summer day.
Pros
- Straightforward list of ingredients
- Light washes of color
- Hydrating formula
Cons
- Not as vast as a shade collection to choose from

Conclusion
Although often downplayed, lip tints are truly remarkable for their rich and bright formulations. We love how smoothly all these products glide on, the shades we can choose from, and the general effectiveness of each one.
Lip tints are unique in that they provide both hydration and color—as opposed to lipsticks, lip glosses, and lip balms, which offer their own benefits. With lip tints, you can go on throughout the day not needing to worry about your lips feeling dry after applying color. And we absolutely love that!
With our above list of our favorite five organic lip tints, we hope you found a product that you’re inclined to try out! We would suggest any of these products to our family and friends—that’s how stoked we are about them.
Have you tried your hand at lip tints? What do you think of them in comparison to other lip products? We always love hearing from you, so feel free to give us a shoutout in the comments!
Thanks for reading!

Amazing article! I had never heard of lip tints before and thought your article would bore me to pieces. Not! I read it quite thoroughly. Now I’m even interested in trying these organic recommendations; I opened up a few links in separate tabs. I haven’t worn makeup in many long years. It is because I found that all foundations would look caked, and I hate that look. Lipsticks, glosses, and even chapsticks would cake into unsightly lines if I didn’t check it frequently enough. Thank you for enlightening me!
Thanks for the kind words, Cathy!
