what to look for in a natural hairspray

What You Need in a Natural Hair Spray

  • Aloe vera promotes hair growth and calms and hydrates the hair and scalp. It can treat a variety of scalp issues, such as dandruff and irritation.
  • Have you heard of humectants before? If not, they are substances that can bind water to themselves, meaning they are great as moisturizers! One such humectant is vegetable glycerin, and it can be found in a number of natural hair sprays.
  • Tea tree oil not only smells lovely, but it’s also an antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiseptic remedy to dry scalps.
  • Another essential oil, rosemary is stimulating and encourages hair growth. It also smells exceptionally refreshing.
  • Hydrating and soothing, honey has been found to do away with itchiness, flakiness, and general scalp irritation.

Ingredients to Avoid in Hair Sprays

  • Irritating to the skin and respiratory system, benzene should be avoided for its damaging effects on the body.
  • If a product lists fragrance as an ingredient, beware: It could be a signal for phthalates, which are human-made ingredients that pose health concerns to human health and the environment.
  • If you’re familiar with natural skin products, you may have heard of the term paraben before. If not, know that these should be avoided as they disrupt hormones and may be linked to cancer.
  • Although retinol has been receiving acclaim lately in the beauty sphere, be cautious: It may pose a threat to female development and reproductive organs, posing a particular threat to pregnant women.
  • Sulfates are drying and strip the hair of naturally produced sebum.

Thanks for the heads up on paraben in hair sprays, I had no idea it was cancer causing so that’s definitely an ingredient to avoid! I did a little research and found out that paraben has been found to be present in breast tumors which I find very disturbing.

It’s actually a good thing that you’re highlighting some of these potentially harmful ingredients that, to be honest, most of us would never even think about were it not for articles like this.

I particularly like the look of Josh Rosebrook’s hair spray that gives a real solid hold without having to come in contact with harmful ingredients. I don’t think rosemary, peppermint, sage, and oregano will do anyone much harm 🙂

Keep up the good work and keep flagging up ingredients in everyday products that are potentially harmful.

    Hi Andrea,

An impressive list of hair sprays, I loved the reading!

I used to use rosemary for my hair a few years ago, and I did have good results. But it takes time to boils water and let infuse the rosemary, so I stopped:) I haven’t used hair sprays so far because I was afraid of the chemicals. I didn’t know there are natural hair sprays on the market and I am really pleased about it.
As my hairs are fine and I love Lavender, I will choose the first spray on the list, Innersense. Just would like to know if it is possible to return it if I find out the spray doesn’t suit me?

Thank you for this excellent post!

Thank you so much for your research on natural hairspray. The conventional ones damage my hair so bad and it so hard it wash it off!! Also, the smell is too intense sometimes that I sneeze a lot. I am thinking that I might be allergic to some of them. So, let’s cut to the chase, I have Asian hair it is like a scavenger hunt for me to find the right one. What do you think which hairspray will work best for me. I would love to go for the organic.

    Hi Andrea

I have very fine hair can you tell me why you say Josh Rosebrook’s hair spray is not good for fine hair? I want a lightweight strong hold hair spray which it is, but why is it not recommended for fine hair?

Thank you! If I purchase it ill go through your link 🙂

Hi David, the reason Josh Rosebook’s hair spray is not recommended for fine hair is that it is a bit too heavy and will weigh down your hair. I would recommend using the Innersense I Create Finish for your fine hair 🙂

    Hi Andrea,

Thank you for providing such an insightful article!

I am looking for a natural and/or organic hair spray that would allow me to pull off the hairstyle in the attached link/image. It looks like I have fine, thin hair. I do not know which hold this requires (low, med, or high). Appreciate the help here!

    Regards,
    J

Hi J, thanks for stopping in! I would say you probably need a firm hold to achieve that hairstyle. I would recommend Josh Rosebrook’s Firm Hold Hair Spray.
