Aloe Vera is a widely recognized treatment and cure of cuts, burns and minor abrasions. A member of the cactus family, Aloe Vera has thick pierced leaves which produce a thick gel that contains anti bacterial, pain inhibitors, coagulating agent, anti-inflammatory, scar reducing properties, and other vitamins, which stimulate cell growth and boost your body’s immune system. In addition to this, aloe vera is rich in minerals, proteins, enzymes, and amino acids, which are highly required for precise skin functioning.

Acne is a common skin problem which occurs when your skin pores are clogged with dead cells and bacteria. This problem is commonly experienced on the face, chest and back, and the common symptoms include irritation, pain and itching. Luckily, aloe vera can help with a number of these problems. I know what it is like to have acne (you can read about my journey here), it is embarrassing and you would do just about anything to get rid of it.

How does Aloe Vera treat Acne?

As you may know, aloe vera contains helpful hormones called gibberellins and polysaccharides, which are essential in treating bacteria causing acne. Aloe vera is also rich in proteins, enzymes and amino acids which remove excess oil aloe-vera-678040_640and dead skin that clog your skin pores causing bacterial infections.

Aloe vera is also rich in vitamin C and E, which helps to remove scars, pains, redness, and inflammation. It helps in rebuilding damaged skin, purifies the blood, and stimulates cell growth.

As much as I would love to tell you otherwise, Aloe vera is not a “cure” for acne. It does not get to the root of what is causing your acne, but it can drastically reduce the swelling, redness and inflammation associated with acne.

If you use it everyday, it will help reduce future outbreaks by preventing bacteria from infecting acne wounds. Aloe vera accelerates your skin’s process of healing and helps reduce scars by promoting cell regeneration.

  • Magnesium lactate in Aloe helps to mitigate the itching sensation caused by acne.
  • Aloe contains salicylic acid, a compound that helps eliminate acne by unclogging pores.
  • The anthraquinone present in Aloe boosts cell development and lightens skin pigmentation.
  • Astringent properties of Aloe removes excess dirt and oil from the skin.
  • Contains mannans, polysaccharides, and saponins like gibberellin that kill acne bacteria.

Aloe vera is best used to heal old acne scars or as a moisturizer for people on acne regimens.

How to use Aloe Vera to treat Acne

There are many methods which you can use to treat acne. They range from traditional methods to modernized methods. This section will review some of the most effective and hygienic methods which you can consider to treat acne.

Method 1aloe vera and acne - aloe plant

Step 1: wash the affected areas of your skin with an antibacterial soap at least twice a day. Gently scrub the affected spots with soap and use warm water to rinse your skin. Use a clean dry towel and avoid reusing the towels, as it can add more acne bacteria into the un-infected areas.
Step 2: using a pair of scissors or a sharp knife, cut the outer leaf of the aloe plant. Ensure that you cut the thickest part of the leaf at the bottom and be careful not to damage the plant.
Step 3: squeeze the gel from the freshly cut leaf over the affected areas on your skin. Allow the aloe to thoroughly dry before applying anything else on your skin. For additional protection, it’s advisable to apply a layer of antibacterial cream to help catalyze the healing process.

Method 2

The second method of treating acne involves mixing two tea spoons of minced aloe vera leaves and one whipped egg. After mixing the two, add another teaspoon of lime juice, then thoroughly mix the concoction. Add the concoction to your skin and allow it to dry, before washing your face with plain clean water.

Method 3

This method involves mixing aloe juice with homemade lotion of calendula tincture. After mixing two teaspoons of calendula tincture with three teaspoons of aloe juice, add cool boiled water to the mixture and use the concoction to wash your skin at least twice a day.

Method 4

This method involves boiling the aloe leaves with hot water for at least 15 minutes. Pour the resulting product in a basin and wait for it to cool, before washing your skin with the concoction at list twice a day.

Using Aloe Vera and Oils

In addition to this, it’s important to note that there are other oils which can help in treatment of acne when combined with aloe vera. They include grapefruit oil, clove oil and tea tree oil. Aloe vera can also be very strong in treating acne, as well other skin infections when combined with eucalyptus, rosemary, camphor or fir oils.

Aloe vera mixed with Jojoba oil makes an excellent moisturizer for people with acne. This mixture will help moisturize yous skin and balance oil production, without clogging your pores. Jojoba oil carries the Aloe deep into your pores to nourish, protect and moisturize. By themselves, they can be too strong. Aloe is too strong and wet, Jojoba is too strong and dry, when you mix them together you get the perfect skin moisturizer.
