essential oils for dry skin

Keeping skin safe and moist is a must all year round. Dry skin is prone to damage which makes it necessary to use lotions or essential oils to lock in the moisture.

Choosing the right essential oil makes a big difference. Here are three essential oil recipes that can help you avoid dry skin.

Ease Dry Skin with Rosewood Essential Oil

Brazilian rosewood extract is a powerful antibacterial and antiseptic, making it effective against different infections.

Rosewood oil between 0.12 and two percent concentration can inhibit the antimicrobial activity of organisms such as Salmonella and Candida.

Linalool which is present in the essential oil is an active anti-inflammatory agent. Rosewood oil is also being studied for potential anticancer activity.

Nerol, geraniol, limonene, and 8-cineole –four other components in rosewood oil helps in tissue regeneration. With all these properties combined, rosewood essential oil is your best defense against dry and damaged skin.

You can make your own rosewood essential oil moisturizer. Here’s how:

  • Prepare an ounce of unscented lotion
  • Add 10 to 15 drops of rosewood oil
  • Stir the mixture together

Heal Fresh Cracks with Lavender Oil

Known for its calming properties, lavender oil is also a go-to remedy for people with cracked skin. In extreme cases, dryness leads to chafing and cracks.

Lavender oil has a complex structure. Active ingredients in this essential oil include flavonoid, tannins, rosmarinic acid, limonene, linalool, and borneol.

Lavender oil’s chemical components make it ideal for treating cracked skin. One study conducted on rats demonstrates lavender oil’s skin regeneration properties.

The said study indicates that the topical application of lavender oil resulted in collagen synthesis. As a result, wounds closed faster compared to control groups.

Soaking your skin in water with lavender oil helps ease cracked skin. To prepare your moisturizing bath, you need the following:

  • Lavender essential oil
  • Tepid water for your tub

Seven drops are recommended for your bath although pregnant women should only use two drops. Older people and children between four and 12 years old should use four drops of lavender oil.

Take note that tepid water is neither hot nor cold. You need to soak for about 15 minutes to add moisture to your skin’s outer layer.

Right after your lavender oil soak, apply a moisturizing lotion. Here’s a fantastic recipe for a lotion that can help heal skin cracks faster.

  • 1 oz. unscented lotion
  • 5 drops Helichrysum
  • 5 drops Neroli
  • 10 drops Lavender oil

Look for a clean jar and mix all the ingredients above. This lotion would help skin regeneration, and you need to apply this as often as necessary.

Remove All Signs of Skin Dryness with Sandalwood Oil

Skin dryness brings a lot of problems –inflammation is one of the worst. To relieve this discomfort, you can use sandalwood oil.

Fortunately, sandalwood contains santalol –an effective anti-inflammatory component. Santalol can reduce swelling and relieve dry skin.

Sandalwood oil can be applied topically for instant relief. You need to massage three to five drops of the oil on the affected area of your skin.

For people with high blood pressure, topical application of the oil has a calming effect too. Massaging the oil on your wrist, neck, and chest can decrease blood pressure.

Sandalwood oil makes a great moisturizer, especially when combined with other essential oils. For your homemade moisturizer, you can mix the following.

  • 2 oz. carrier oil of your choice
  • 3 drops Rosewood oil
  • 5 drops Ylang Ylang oil
  • 7 drops Geranium oil
  • 10 drops Sandalwood oil

All you need to do is mix everything and keep it in a bottle. This recipe has a long shelf life so that you can mix large quantities at once.

You need to apply a thin layer, and your skin should absorb this moisturizing recipe in 10 minutes. When you apply just the right amount, there should be no residue left.

When combined with milk, sandalwood oil also makes a great face pack. You need to combine the following ingredients:

  • Three teaspoons powdered milk
  • Three teaspoons sandalwood oil
  • One teaspoon Rose Water

You need to combine the first two ingredients in a bowl. Add just enough rose water to form a paste and mix everything with a spoon.

After preparing the paste, apply it on your face. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, and wash it off with cool water.

You can use this face pack three times a week. This combination can also balance your skin’s pH level.

The combined nutrients in milk and sandalwood oil will make your skin glow. Meanwhile, the rose water acts as a toner.

Warning: Young children and breastfeeding women should not use sandalwood oil for safety purposes. People with sensitive skin should also be careful about using this oil.

Now It’s Your Turn…

While you can’t control the humidity and the weather, you can always do something to protect your skin. Essential oils are not just fragrant and medicinal; they can help you avoid dry and damaged skin.

While these moisturizing recipes can help, don’t forget to do your part.

Always drink plenty of fluids –hydration always starts within. When it’s daytime, don’t forget to wear your sunscreen and apply moisturizer.

Mastering the uses of rosewood, lavender, and sandalwood oil should help you maintain your skin’s health and beauty especially during the summer months.

With these tips and homemade recipes, you can avoid having dry skin while putting essential oils to good use.
